Reading the description it must be some sort of AR part. Since I'm not an AR guy, I am clueless as to what this is??

The "benefit" to the extended design, beside offered a differing look, is the underside of the extended endplate usually has a QD opening for attaching a sling. The disadvantage is that you almost always lose the first position on the receiver extension, which is commonly- but incorrectly, called a buffer tube. This means that the stock will no longer retract fully. 0 -

I caught the QD part, and related that to a sling, but since my AR is a fixed stock I didn't quite connect the dots.0 -
A QD point on the underside of the extension is popular for use with PDWs. It allows you can carry the weapon concealed under a coat, or simply have it in front of you at all times.
