just in kitchen and no hot water in sink, gas on, no hot water in shower, went downstairs and it is almost flooded, one of the braided lines hot out of water tank is leaking, I think. we had new furnace put in last year and the newfangled exhaust and intake lines for fresh air are right in front of hot water lines so can't really see the leak. all this is in a 6x6ft room in center of basement, carpet is soaked, headed out to lowes to get two more lines inlet, and outlet, may as well replace them both, just hope the water didn't run down inside the burner/electrical section of the hot water tank, got it draining now, will also have to pull a piece of paneling off the back of the room so I can get to it from behind with all the new furnace piping in front. I have the know how just not sure if the body still knows how to bend into those funny shapes needed to get in to it, and hope the water tank is still good, put a small fan in the burner opening and hope to dry all that out, will find out in few hours, gotta love these unplanned afternoon projects..............

    may have gotten lucky, got a mess to clean up but got the two lines replaced turned water on, no leaks so far, water heater lit right up, am just waiting for it to get hot and build a little pressure, then will know for sure. wife keeps an old amoure? against one wall sort of a guest bedroom, panelling was brittle so I just cut a big square about 4 inches smaller than the amoure and pulled the whole wall section out it isn't load baring got a mess of sawdust and wet carpet but may have gotten lucky on water heater, should know in hour or so if no leaks should be good to go..... till wife sees the basement, it may be my bedroom till mess is cleaned up

    have room behind the water heater to make small closet and only take up about a foot of other room, may have to go this route and just leave panel on back of new closet loose to access water heater from backside if needed again got about 2 1/2 to 3 foot of empty room behind furnace/water heater would make small walk in closet if needed, that will probubly be my next project after the holidays......

    Pull the carpet down there and paint he floors with some of the fancy stuff they make for that. Then use rugs where needed. At least that will take care of some of the issues when things like this happen.

    The closet sounds like a good idea. I've done similar things before.

    So how are you going to pull the heater out when it is time to replace it? Seems like poor planning on the part of the HVAC people. I know, not their problem... :(

    just had it replaced and I have access from other side of this "room", to front of furnace and water heater, old furnace was original 40+ years, and vented out small vent with water heater, new ones need 3 inch fresh air intake and 2 inch exhaust pipe, both of which had to be angled down over and in front of top of the water heater to fit new furnace, which just blocks the water inlet and outlet lines from water heater, I could have removed the plastic vents from furnace but they are glued in place, easier to pull backside of this little "room" that was built around the furnace/water heater, it was just to big a hassle reaching through the tangle of pipes to do it from the front, all open from the back. it could be tilted from the front and wrestled out under the new piping and lines reattached reaching through the new tangle of pipes but it is to big a pain for me with the twisting and bending needed, I guess a younger fellow would have no trouble if he was careful.

    Yeah, and since it won't be you getting younger, maybe put in an on demand water heater when it is time to replace this one. That is our plan for the next one.

    we debated the on demand last time, this one is only about 2-3 years old, since kids gone, just me and wife, not sure we need on demand, though it is cheaper in long run maybe in few years the price will come down a little more and make the decision a lot easier, around here for a good one you are still looking at about double the original purchase price over conventional hot water heater.

    True that, and I am not sure why. I first encountered them in England back in '82 and they have been using them in Europe for decades, and have it down pretty well. Since houses are old there, most are small units simply mounted on the bathroom or kitchen wall.
