    When I was in Africa there are always stories of cattle thieves. When they get caught they get hung and then burned They are rarely shown any mercy.

    One time I was in Kenya in a town called Meru. We were training Kenyan soldiers and setting up a Ranger type course for them. Well the next big town over was Nanuki and they had been plagued with cattle thieves.

    So this witch Doctor from Tanzania was in town(The best witch Dr's are from Tanzania BTW) and he said he would cast a spell on the cattle in the area for some money. The locals took him up on it and he cast a spell. Now this is in the News Paper it's not some story that was related 2nd hand.

    The Thieves show up at night and try to steal 10 or 12 cows from this guy. Well the cows and the thieves walked in circles all night and are back where they started and get caught. The Witch Dr says this is the spell I cast the the cattle would return to where they started and the thieves would wander because they would not be able to see the moon. The owner of the cows felt sorry for the cow thieves and instead of hanging them he turned them over to the police.

    About 2 weeks after I read this story I went to Nanuki and met the Witch Doctor. He was a scrawny old guy with a goat skin wrapped around himself, living in a mud and stick hut with a few chickens and a mangy old dog that was crippled. I brought him a couple of packs of cigarettes, a bottle of home made Palm Wine, some Kat my landlord grew and a pint of Cane Whisky. I got him to cast a spell on this wooden effigy of one of the gods who live on My Kenya. I asked him to put a curse on anyone who stole from my house or broke into it...............he did.

    8 years later some AH tried to break into my house while we were all gone. He tried to use a ladder to get into the second floor. The ladder slipped off the house and he broke his leg ;)

    Is that Aberdeen South Dakota? That is where my ancestors homesteaded, Mina. My ancestors are buried in the Aberdeen graveyard.

    111 cattle reported stolen or missing in McPherson County

    The McPherson County Sheriff's Office and South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation are investigating a series of potential cattle theft cases involving 111 missing animals.

    Four different producers have reported loses from pastures in the county in the last two months, according to a news release from McPherson County Sheriff Dave Ackerman.

    The first report of 46 lost, missing or stolen cows and calves was on Oct. 29, according to the release. The bull calves have a white tag on the right ear. The heifer calves have a white tag on the left ear. The cattle belong to Bruce Mack of Leola.

    Three additional reports were made last month:

    On Nov. 5, 23 steers were reported lost, missing or stolen. The livestock are varied in color but have a brand on the left hip. They belong to Ron and Tater Hins of Huron.
    On Nov. 18, 39 head of cattle were reported lost, missing or stolen. They include 12 Hereford cows, five black Angus cows, 11 black-and-white faced calves and 11 black calves. The calves are not branded. The livestock belong to Delbert Leonhardt of Mansfield.
    On Nov. 27, three black Angus cows, all bred and branded, were reported lost, missing or stolen. These belong to Jason Hammrich of Aberdeen.
    In a follow-up email about the incidents, Ackerman said questions about the brand designs can be addressed with him directly. It is also unknown when cattle disappeared or if they were taken all at one time.

    The recent reports add to cattle thefts reported in McPherson County in 2016 and 2017, which remain open investigations. In 2016, 19 calves were reported missing. In 2017, 11 cows were reported stolen.

    People who have information should call the McPherson County Sheriff's Office at 605-439-3400 or email the sheriff at mcphersonso@valleytel.net.

    Tips leading to the conviction of anybody connected to stealing branded livestock, might be eligible for a reward, according to the release. A list of cattle thefts reported to the brand board can be fund at www.sdbrandboard.com/inspections/missingstolen.aspx.

    There was a steak place out in the middle of nowhere that had a steak you got for free if you could eat the entire thing. I was under 10 years old, so I don't know what size it was. I remember being BORED out of my mind when we went there because it was a long car ride just to go eat something (a kids way of thinking.)

    When I got older I thought about it and asked "whatever happened to that steak place called Bugtussles? (Yep...that was the name of it.)

    It turned out they were stealing cattle. I guess that big steak wasn't such a prize after all.

    It's just a side effect of good times, where there is a market there will always be a supplier and with our economy roaring I'm guessing they didn't have any trouble selling the beef :D. Now the question is, will the Demo's blame Trump and add another charge to his impeachment :lol:

    Back in 1976, way up here in New York State on the Vermont border, I arrested a rustler. He stole twenty head of cows and took them over the State line into Massachusetts. The FBI got involved.

    gotta wonder if local meatpacker is involved, I thought cattle now had to be "tattooed" or some such so they can identify the owner, because of the outbreak of hoof and mouth and such .....

    I have a friend that's a Brand Inspector for Idaho in this district.
    Not long ago, he had to drive to a feed lot in Nebraska as they had recieved a load of calves without the brand being cleared before shipping. I'm not sure how much the fine was but the mileage and expense bill was substantial.

    He had to go inspect the calves and determine if they had been rustled or the shipper was just trying to pull a sneaky, but the Brand inspector in Nebraska was doing his job to catch them on delivery to the feed lot.

    I've seen people at the sale barn get very irate when the sold animal got inspected after a sale and the check was made out to the owner of the brand because the previous sale that brand hadn't been cleared and the seller didn't have the proper paperwork to make the sale legal.

    I personally got involved in one on a horse from Washington state that the owner moved to Idaho and then sold the horse in Idaho but never cleared the brand in Washington from the Guy he bought the horse from and didn't get the horse inspected when he got to Idaho, but we got it inspected on purchase and it turned to a three month ordeal with three tickets being issued, one to the guy in Washington, and one from Idaho and one from Washington to the seller in Idaho.

    Rustling is alive and well, even without simple inspection mistakes.

    There is one in Amarillo Texas .. eat the whole thing and it's free! In the late 70's it was a 64 oz but now it's a 72 oz steak...and they are still open.
