A pair started doing touch and go's about an hour ago and are flying right over my office.

I remember calling them in for a kodak run in Naval Gunfire School and they would fly over the bunker at about 20 feet. It would rock your world. I miss seeing them in the air and hitting stuff with the 5" rockets man they were badass.0 -

The Air Force used to fly jets up the Tennessee River where I worked at Widows Creek Steam Plant near Stevenson, AL quite often back in the early 90s.
I got the crap scared out of me one day by a couple of them as I was walking across the rooftop of Unit 8. It felt like they were right on top of me all of a sudden. Of course they were high enough to clear all the power lines we had but they were so loud and I was not expecting it so it sounded like they were right on me. :shock:
They would fly up river and hang a left and fly around Monteagle Mountain near where I lived at in Jasper, TN. I was talking to my wife on the phone one day from my office at work as they flew by the plant and I told her they should be flying by our house in just a few minutes. It was only a couple of minutes and I could hear them from her phone as they flew over our house. They seemed to fly the same route all the time.

As a teenager, out bean walking NE of Carroll, Iowa, (very flat terrain), jets would come over us from the rear, barely off the deck. Scare the bejesus out of you. Looked like they would raise up to over the power lines.
Mid eighties, don?t know what flavor they were. Pretty cool though!0 -
Every once in a while, the C-5's out of Travis change their landing flight path, and sound like they're going to land on the house! Occasional F-16's coming out of Travis always come this way. In the summer, a local P-51 comes over, there's no mistaking that Allison purring when he does. 0 -
First time I ever saw one in the flesh was at a 1776-1976 bicentennial "expo" when along with numerous flyovers of various military planes of all types, a special surprise performance was announced .
A Marine Harrier came scorching overhead at probably 500 feet did a big circle around the crowd of several thousand people and came to a virtual standstill over a large empty circle in the middle of the exposition , it then landed and sat on the ground for a few minutes as the viewers clapped and screamed their astonishment and pride in what we all just witnessed.Then even better, the vertical take-off with all the noise and blowing exhaust and it was gone.
That made a big impression on me and all that were there, a great memory .0 -

Our Hill AFB is home to the first operational F-35 squadrons. We have 78 of the jets. They're the loudest jets I've heard yet. (But I haven't heard a B-1 in full burner) My house is eight air miles from the end of the runway, and takeoffs rattle my windows. I can't imagine what it's like for the poor sods living a mile away. They fly a low-level training route that ends coming out of a canyon a half-mile from my house. They come screaming out of that canyon at 500 feet, and you can't hear them coming until they are right there. THAT will make you jump, I assure you.
We are a major maintenance facility, so all kinds of planes come through here. I've heard almost everything we have, and none of them touch the F-35's one huge engine for noise.0 -
I get V-22 Ospreys, here.
Flying nap of the Earth down our Holler, (500' overhead?) headed towards the small rural Airport, apprx. 3 miles away. Doing touch and go's. (Impressive to watch.)
Airport Managers Son is a V-22 Pilot. (May have something to do with it.)
Harriers are cool too. 8-)

We had a Harrier crash at Camp Lemonnier last year. Pilot ejected clear of the jet.

Talking to some of the guys, turns out it's common for them to dump 1 Harrier per deployment - usually during the vertical take off or landing.0 -

Yeah, well when they fly right over your head, (on the down low) and then hit it, you can most definately hear them.
Picture Broken Arrow, when the hot red headed Ranger Chic gets a fly over, at low altitude, early on in the movie.
If it makes you feel any better, we did not hear it coming over us from behind, until it would have been way too late. :shock: :? 0 -
