Question for sailors
I floated from Okinawa to Korea courtesy of the USN. Every night over the 1MC came the announcement, ?Taps, taps, now taps, the time on deck is 2100 hours, the smoking lamp is out, the weather decks are secured, all personnel turn to in their own racks. Now taps.?
Can anyone explain to me why sailors have to be told to get into their own beds?
Actually I know the real answer but it's fun to take a poke the squids now and then.

I posted this in a vet group on fb and got corrected on a couple things. The smoking lamp is out in all berthing spaces and taps wasn't until 22000 -

My service spanned that time frame. That was when women were just being introduced on board ships. At time it was just auxiliaries. In 1981 I was just entering the fleet, and always on combatants. We did berth alongside the Ajax off Yemen a few years after that, and one of the first things we received was a price list from the working girls aboard. Some supplemented their wages significantly.0 -
