its usually an insulated ground wire from a piece of equipment back to the earth ground. helps with isolating a sensitive piece of equipment from various small signals that are a part of the regular grounding system. key word sensitive. 0 -

The primary reason for the use of isolated grounds (IG) is to provide a noise-free ground return, separate from the equipment grounding (EG) return. The EG circuit includes all of the metal conduit, outlet boxes, and metal enclosures that contain the wiring and must be grounded to provide a safe return path in case of fault currents. The IG provides an insulated, separate ground path for the ground reference in electronic equipment, such as computers, hospital equipment, and audio equipment. IG does not break ground loops, which can damage equipment like computers, printers, etc.. Interconnected computer equipment often benefits from single-point grounding.
IG is only used with special equipment that require it. The IG is typically insulated and separate all the way back to the point of earth grounding rod outside of the building. The IG is NOT connected neutral or any other. Due to the installation of a separate, insulated conductor and the associated special outlets required, IG circuits are more expensive to install than standard power circuits.
Its main downside is that an insulated grounding connection has higher impedance than a non-isolated grounding connection, and no redundancy, so safety is reduced. Isolated ground receptacles are allowed in patient care areas, but only when installed outside the immediate patient care vicinity.0 -

We use isolated grounds for low voltage analogue circuits that are contained within a specific subsystem.
This protects that subsystem from variations in the system ground which could be the result of a short or a surge in the main system.
The isolated ground is eventually brought back to the main system ground, usually at the source. If this is not done, the isolated ground becomes a floating ground, and is a potential shock hazard.
Example: 480 volt incoming power is sent to 480 loads and to a 480/120 volt transformer. Both the 480 and 120 have a common ground at the transformer.
At a remote location, the 120 is split between the 120 volt control components and is also fed to a 24 VDC transformer which power a 0 -10 volt or 4 - 20 mA device. This 24 Volt circuit will typically have a separate ground that is isolated from the 120 volt ground in the local panel. That isolated ground is brought back to the common ground at the main electrical panel because this common ground will be more stable and more consistent than the 120 volt ground at the local panel in the event of a failure in that panel or in a device fed from that panel.
Lastly, isolated grounds are prettier than common grounds. We like to use a green/yellow terminal instead of a simple green terminal to provide color, contrast, and just a bit of whimsy in the panel itself.0 -

In operating rooms we use an isolated power system, kinda cool since taking a reading from one side of an outlet to ground will give you about 60 volts and same on the other side. 120 volts between the two but not 120 to ground. The ground is not an earth ground so to speak. A transformer provides 60 volts to what would normally be a neutral side and hot side. I think you are referring to this though, a isolated ground is not electrically or mechanically connected to anything else. IE: it goes all the way back to the earth ground connection. It reduces noise and frequency cvariations0 -
