Monongah mine disaster 12/06/1907

?On Friday, December 6, 1907, there were officially 367 men in the two mines, although the actual number was much higher as officially registered workers often took their children and other relatives into the mine to help. At 10:28 AM an explosion occurred that killed most of the men inside the mine instantly.?

    It is believed, most were killed in the initial explosion.

    a lot of terrible accidents in mines
    as a kid my mom and grandma told me of this one we lost a group of brothers ( Massengill(s)were my relation on moms side ( grandpa's side )
    the internet has given me more info on it over the fact they were killed

    The MASSENGILL brothers are sons of JAMES NELSON MASSENGILL, of Claiborne county, Tenn. Their bodies were to be shipped to Tazewell for burial.

    Four rescue teams worked feverishly throughout the night in an effort to reach the last of the victims trapped by the blast a mile and a half from the opening of the mine high up the side of Black Mountain.

    1907 was a terrible year for the mines. I live in the old coal office of Banning number two just two miles from where the Darr Mine (Banning number 3)explosion happened. 237 died that day. Coal built this country, coal keeps the lights on. I come from coal.
    Today is National Miners Day.

    Robena Mine blew up on this day in 1962 also. SW Greene county Pa. 37 dead. I've heard it said that the air this time of year is hard to move because it's cold and damp which makes it dense so the methane sticks around longer. There was a program on public tv about the Darr mine disaster. It was bad. Those miners got blown apart and burnt to a crisp. Many unidentified. Both Darr and Monongah blew on the day of the feast of Saint Nicholas so many of the miners were off work that day. At Darr the company gave the survivors of the deceased $100. Many of the widowed wives of the immigrant miners packed up and went back to the old country.

    Yes I am. I'm over in Greene Co. I've got a son and a son-in-law in the mines over here. Good to hear of a local. I posted that last night and went to bed so that's why the time lapse. I planned to be out deer hunting but realized the last thing I need is a dead deer.
