Built as trainers for the CETME rifle, Spain converted M1943 98 Mauser Short Rifles to the FR-8 in 7.62 CETME. At the same time they converted M1916 small ring Mausers to the FR-7. Importers advertised both as ".308 Winchester". That works fine in the FR-8, but has one helluva muzzle blast with that short barrel. .308W is way over the pressure limits of the FR-7, and the end result at best, is locking lug setback, trashing the action.
3 cartridges identical in appearance, CETME, NATO, and .308W, but three different chamber pressures. The CETME cartridge was developed to have the same chamber working pressures of the 7x57 Mauser military load. .308 is more than 10,000psi higher than that.
The FR-8 is fun to shoot, with .308W recoil is a little stiff, and the muzzle flash will give you a suntan. Load .308 brass with .300 Savage load data, and it's pleasant to shoot. Don't break or lose any parts, they're hard to find.
