What the heck is an Air fryer?
Is it a convection oven, a convection and something else combination .......... or what?
How exactly does it work (ok to get technical).

It works exactly the opposite of an oil baker. 0 -
My daughter insisted that they bring hers over for 4th of July cookout to do the Okra. I already had my fryer out by the grill doing tots, fries and onion rings. So I let her take a whirl with it.... Nastiest mush I have ever seen.... Luckily I had another bag of okra to prepare correctly.
Far as I can tell it is a toaster oven sized convection oven at a wal mart price. Don't get me wrong, I love my convection oven and my Convection oven / Radiant / Microwave. That bad boy on triple mode will cook some things you would normally fry as fast and as crispy as a fryer and you can make small servings quick. It does take a 220V circuit and cost $1200+ but when the Magnetron burnt out the second time (first time at 9 years old it was still in warrantee) 2nd time at 17 years total and I had to use a plain old microwave for a month I ponied up for a new one.
In general if Emeril is selling it on TV, you dont want it. I love the old Guy's recipes and have eaten at many of his restaurants but the crap he sells on TV is just that. CRAP.0 -
In theory, an air fryer uses a tiny bit of oil and a blast of very hot air to mimic frying. The chief benefit claim is that the cooked food has 75% less oil/fat.
I can't comment on how well they work.0 -
Rocky, thanks for the clarity. I've wondered and you've reasonably explained. Sounds more like a gimmick to me to separate hard earned cash from not so deep pockets, for others YMMV. 0 -

I just now heard a review on these things on the radio done by American Test Kitchen and they basically said they wouldn't do anything you couldn't do on a rack in your oven. They tested several. 0 -
