Mach 9 Russian Naval Missle Unstoppable?

Let's see so the U.S. Navy has nothing to stop it for destroying a Carrier Armada? Well maybe or maybe not, a Laser base ship could I think do the job!
It's always been a tit-for-tat situation in warfare Technology.

As the Russian leader said, the Tsirkon is capable of developing a speed of Mach 9 and its striking range capability can exceed 1,000 km. The Russian leader also said that the Tsirkon could strike both naval and ground targets. Experts say the Tsirkon hypersonic missile cannot be intercepted by any existing air defense capabilities.

The Navy hopes to begin fielding a megawatt-class laser in the 2025 timeframe. A laser with that kind of power could destroy ballistic missiles, but might require a very large host ship that also has ample electrical power. A nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, for instance.

    That's right we are all doomed so what else is new with you. If the damn Russians even think about launching one of those missiles one of our Navy ships will immediately collide with them.

    There is only 1 phase of flight where it is hypersonic.

    The majority of the time from launch it is just another math problem.

    I thought Navy quietly installed "rail guns" on the boats for such things. Kind a should've let Ronny do that "Star Wars" thing way back when or did he?

    just my 2 cents
    if the Russians are bragging about it , odds are its already outdated by USA standards ..
    after all the government really does not pay 1000.00 for a common hammer that money goes some where ;) ( or some line like that out of the men in black movie :D )

    Think about it, in less than 100 years we went from fighting with Black Powder Muskets & swords to dropping Nuclear weapons, that alone is amazing to me :o .......so, in the next 80 yrs don't you think we've advanced our technology somewhat more ?

    I wish I believed we had better technology and capabilities than what we know but then I see how our Government conducts itself day to day and shudder in fear.

    Mach 9 is about 10,000 fps. This is faster than you can drive metal frag with most conventional explosives.

    Meaning if I detonated a defensive warhead anywhere BEHIND an incoming Mach 9 weapon, it would never reach the incoming.

    So you pop your defense in front of it, and let it run into the frag ahead of it. In effect, you have to lead them more. Nothing will maneuver well at that speed, meaning it is going to be on a fixed, predictable track.

    Hypersonics are the real deal. Whoever gets the capability operational first will gain a very real advantage. However, it will be temporary, as other major players will be right behind them. The REAL advantage will go to the nation that develops an effective, versatile, and reliable missile defense system that can be widely fielded, take on multiple threats simultaneously, and leverage artificial intelligence to operate near-autonomously. The biggest challenge presented by hypersonics is the reduction of decision-making time. With the detection-to-strike window shrinking to 2 minutes or less, its tough to classify and respond to the threat in time.

    Anyhow, just my opinion.

    Around 1985 I built a gearbox for the engineers at Ft. Belvior to adapt some existing equipment to increase the speed from 4,500 RPM to 18,000 RPM and handle 18,000 HP.
    The gearbox was for the purpose of developing and testing high power alternators for portable a pulsed beam weapon. Specifically 3 MW to 12 MW alternators. I saw the 3 MW alternator along with the 39" dia. 18,000 RPM flywheel to smooth the load of the pulsing load.

    Within a year of installing the gearbox at Ft. Belvoir, the project went black so I don't know what progress they achieved.

    What baloney!

    We have ships that can track & fire on a couple of hundred targets simultaneously, but they can be put out of action by a single rubber dingy filled with explosives, a wayward container ship, or another US ship whose watch is asleep in their bunks.

    I can't see throwing money away on artificial intelligence, when we have all the natural stupidity you could want, & it's free!
