Fox Squirrel

Today while working my pup I may have shot the largest Fox Squirrel I've ever shot in my life. Man that thing was fat. I didn't even know they could get that fat. I shot a squirrel when I was a kid that may have been as big by weight but it wasn't this fat. The one I shot when I was a kid was all red, dark red on top and almost orange on it's belly. We only have grey and fox squirrels so it must have been a fox squirrel with abnormal coloring. When I cleaned the one I shot today my hands were greasy like they get when you skin a coon.

I weighed it and it was 2 pounds 8.8 ounces. that doesn't seem like much but I read 2 pounds is a large one. I've never weighed a squirrel before so i have no numbers for comparison.

    A two and a half pound squirrel is a big squirrel. Usually those big ones are old and tough as shoe leather.

    Better look that critter over real good there Scout! You may have shot the neighbors cat! :lol:

    You just have to cook the older squirrels longer to tenderize them.

    Yep, it would have went in the stew I made yesterday, if I had had it yesterday.

    That is called a Dumpling squirrel. Pressure cook it first (or boil it for several minutes) then make dumplings. ;)

    I've shot some of the old male Red or Fox squirrels due to jealousy. (I could see that their testicles were larger than mine) ;)

    2.8# squirrel is huge!

    I think I am going to shoot a few here in the backyard. They need to be thinned out and I am hungry ;)

    I shot one of those big Georgia Boomers with a 12 gauge as he sat in the crook of a limb and the trunk of a huge pine and he got highly Teed off! Drop his food as he jumped up and landed back in the crook facing me and chattering to beat hey! Ran up and down and around the trunk in the same angry manner. Had to walk up a lot closer to the tree to bag him, by this time he was a good hundred feet or better in the tree top. He was old and tough, but made a good stew. These big gray boomers with black and white mixed around the head and eyes dress out to that weight, frequently.

    I got 6 squirrel's

    1 was tiny and my dog bit his head off

    1 was really scruffy looking I put him up in a tree branch the other 4 are skinned and ready for the pot. Pressure cooker with onions, garlic, green pepper and seasoning. I will serve over rice.

    All were shot with a Remington 580 in 22lr with Iron sights and Remington Subsonic ammo. I had one miss and I called it the follow up got him. All shots were in the head or front shoulder.

    I am covered up with squirrels this year.

    Big mast drop from all the hardwoods. I have a lot of white and red oaks and bunch of Hickory trees.

    Sam, one of my CO's back in Georgia told me that the biggest squirrel he had ever seen was in North Carolina...probably near the coast since he had been stationed in Lejuene, was solid black and about 36 inches in length. He did not seem to be lying and after I had just shot some of the monster grays in Georgia...I believe him right to this moment. :lol: True story!!!
