    Not sure what protocol should be, but it seems to me that with a hostage in the van and it stopped in a crowded freeway, a little more care should be taken before pulling a trigger.

    If you see the full video of the shootout, there are rounds entering/exiting all over the UPS van.

    Obviously a fairly unique situation, and one that would be difficult to predict to the extent that one could fully train for it.

    Around 10 years ago, UPS began installing real time GPS Tracking devices in its delivery vans.

    One would think that a lower profile pursuit based upon this data would have been a better option.

    Prayer offered for the UPS Driver. Sounds like a hard working Man, caught in a bad situation. :cry:

    Those were a couple of bad dudes. Good riddance to them.
    No way I would be a UPS driver without going heeled.

    Both these guys are bad dudes. One convicted of armed robbery and released after seven years of ten year conviction. Sure sounds like the system is broken somewhere along the line. Meanwhile, two little girls dad won't be coming home tonight. His first day on the job as a driver.

    THAT was the worst cop generated disaster I've seen. What were they thinking? Must have been the " get my gun off and notch my pistol" shift. Geez, what a cluster flap. Sort of too bad they didn't hit each other with their foolishness.

    I really do not like to second guess these situations but I have to agree with your statement.

    I feel terrible about the UPS driver. I hope someone sets up a Go Fund Me page.

    I know, "you had to be there". But, the police had the truck stopped, the perps had no where to go. All they had to do was take a defensive position & wait for the bad guys to come out. The video made it look like high power rounds being fired, but I couldn't tell from which direction.

    No matter how many scenarios you run at the Police Academy, you can't anticipate every possible way that things turn to poop. My local PD had 2 hostage situations that went bad; in both, the police shot & killed the hostage. In recent years, they have used hostage negotiators & have had a lot more success.

    The fallout from the "Coward In Broward"; former deputy Scot Peterson who stayed outside while a gunman killed 17 students, teachers and staff, and wounded 17 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., has changed the mindsets in Florida law enforcement. One of my neighbors is a state trooper and another is a sheriffs deputy. Both have told me privately that they were instructed not to appear passive, but to demonstrate "taking action" when dealing with any crisis involving armed suspects. In this case, the two suspects were never going to allow themselves to be taken alive, so it is likely that the UPS driver would have been killed no matter what course of action was taken by law enforcement.
