Catfish
Went out and caught a few Catfish yesterday. 3 channel cats all were small 2-5 #'s
I cleaned them and fried them last night for supper. I just ate one for breakfast
Man was it good!
I used shad for bait and I caught them with a cast net.
Now I need to shoot a few squirrel for tonight's dinner.

Sounds good to me. The original fast foods.
I'm heading to the cabin for a few days for some relaxation (deer hunting) and the place is over run with squirrels....note to self-take .22 rifle.
There should still be a few trout in the river....hmmm?
I had a friend who used to eat a lot of roadkill. (As long as it was fresh and not "pizzaed).
A fellow that lived near him raised pheasants and I think Joe may have run-down a few birds. I miss Joe.0 -
Sounds good. I thought about going to a farm pond today for a mess of fresh fish but I've got a few other things that need doing. 0 -

That's some nice cats, man! Do many people fish the area where you caught them?0 -
No too many. I have a spot where I can walk through the woods about a mile and come out on a large lake.
The bad thing is my Dogs get really upset when I go fishing. They know they are getting locked up. There is no way you can fish from the bank with 2 Golden Retrievers

Whats your recipe? I catch a lot of catfish off my dock and like them smoked best. If I soak them in milk I can tolerate them better, But I prefer the walleye and bluegill. 0 -
Catfish is some good eating. We used to catch them on the New River using jug lines and chicken entrails. They started stocking muskies a few years ago and seems like the channel cats disappeared.
When I was a kid, seeing some guys with a wash tub full of catfish was not uncommon.
I have heard how imported catfish are raised and I can?t hardly eat them.0 -
Fried Catfish, is my absolute favorite fresh water fish to eat.
Mmmnnnn........................Mmmnnnn..........................
Hush puppies and fries, a little cole slaw. Nirvana.
There was a place down in FL. headed down to the Keys, that absolutely Killed it.0 -

I prize them as well, but having a mess of fried bluegill or some similar type of perch is hard to beat. Then, there are the crappie, bass, and and and

Here ya go:
Ingredients
6 (4- to 6-ounce) catfish fillets
2 cups buttermilk
2 cups yellow cornmeal
1 tablespoon seasoned salt
2 teaspoons pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon salt
Vegetable oil
How to Make It
Step 1
Place catfish fillets in a single layer in a shallow dish; cover with Buttermilk. Cover and chill 1 hour.
Step 2
Combine cornmeal and next 4 ingredients in a shallow dish.
Step 3
Remove catfish fillets from refrigerator, and let stand at room temperature 10 minutes. Remove from buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Sprinkle evenly with 1 teaspoon salt.
Step 4
Dredge catfish fillets in cornmeal mixture, shaking off excess.
Step 5
Pour oil to depth of 1 1/2 inches into a large skillet; heat to 350?. Fry fillets, in batches, about 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on wire racks over paper towels.0 -

I figured that you might have just found a good spot!0 -
I'm waiting on the ice to form on the lakes around here for some hard water fishing!! Last year I bought a new portable fish coop, so I will stay warm and dry no matter what the weather wants to do.
Our state closes trout fishing in all of the streams and rivers here from Sept. till April but they can still be had on the various lakes around. I fish for blue gill, perch, walleye, and on occasion a brown trout or splake sp (which is a cross between a brown trout and a brookie. Have also caught smelt two at a time from speed reels through the ice and they are best this time of year! Bass are also off limits until their season opens in late spring.
I'm still in deer hunting mode with our muzzle loading season starting tomorrow. Have a buck tag left and a doe tag so hopefully more meat for the freezer will be coming my way. But dang Sam! Some surf & turf combo eats sure do get my mouth watering! :P0 -
Good luck on the Deer.
One Funny thing that happened when I was walking to my fishing spot I jumped a very nice Buck. He was a 6 point but with really wide and think beams. He was crashed out under a ceder tree. He jumped up about 5 yards from me. I had a pistol on me(USP 45) and I could have shot him easy. I was walking kind of quiet and the wind was right.0 -
Never cared a lot for catfish, too soft I guess, make my walleye or bluegill please. You are clearly a pretty skilled fisherperson. 0 -
He Dog we think a lot alike! You must be from one of the Northern States where fish taste like they are supposed to. LOL 0 -

Wooo you lucky dog. I loves my fried catfish. 0 -
Krogers used to have catfish pieces, small quarter to half dollar size chunks and would sell for $1.99 or less pound, I never really liked the filets but the pieces were good and mild tasting, we would allways get a few pounds when we got them in fresh and batter em up and make fish nuggets........ 0 -
If the catfish your frying is soft and not firm, something's not right with the catfish or the method use to prepare and cook them. 0 -

Yep.
Responding to the bits and pieces of Catfish reply/post.
There was a place up North, that would carry Crawfish (cleaned) for a ridiculously cheap price. ($3.99/lb?) I'd buy bags of them. Steamed/sauteed in Butter/Garlic. Mmmmmnnnnnnnn,.......................Mmmmnnnnnnnn.
Absolutely Awesome.0 -
