Heating guys, I have questions....
My wife and I will be building a new house soon, plan to start in about 18 months or so, and are trying to decide on the best way to heat it. I'm leaning towards a radiant heat system with the tubing mounted on the underside of the subfloor material which will be 1 1/8" plywood. Is this going to work well in a cold climate (Kalispell, MT area) or is there a better way of going about it? There will be a basement area underneath so access will be fairly easy and it will be insulated under the tubing.

I had that system in base housing in New Jersey and I can only remember that it was sufficient. I currently have a hydronic (hot water) system in southern Michigan and it is good IF you have good insulation and good windows, which is the key to retaining the heat. 0 -
the 'under floor' systems are comfortable but not terribly efficient, no turning the thermostat up/down. the most cost effective system (and efficient) is forced air with a heat pump (both heat and cooling) and in your case a zoned system. 0 -
Primary - We have a heat pump - 1 zone (thermostat) for the entire house. Heat and cool.
Backup/Assist - Baseboard electric - each room is zoned seperately and may be used with primary or w/o.
Backup - Wood furnace - heats the house without electricity but is fantastic when fans are on the generator during power outage.
You should consider costs and availibilty of energies in you area, as well as history of power outages.
If I were doing it today, I would certainly add floor and wall tubing in some areas.0 -
I had a system like that a long time ago 1980+/-. The electric bill was HUGE. Possibly that type of system has improved. 0 -
Oh, and make sure you get a guy that knows what he is doing. I had a friend (in Alaska) that had to sue the builder and tear out the basement/garage floor and start over. Very expensive! I think he got the builder's bond and that was about it. His wife gave up and left, went nuts (actually started out nuts! Haha)
Note: I read a book years ago about building a home. It was written by a couple that built the house.

This guy is a homesteader in rural New Hampshire and it looks pretty cold. .
He designed his house to be heated with wood ONLY and appears have a lot of trees on wooded acreage? He and his wife just finished building a "prefabricated" barn,, identical to the one he built a few years ago. PS: He has a fan sitting on the top of his whole house stove that operates by the cooktop it sits on,, kind of neat.
