Remington Model 11 Stock Finish

I have a Remington Model 11,made the last year of production,I think about 1947, that I need to clean the wood.I hope to not have to sand and refinish it,just clean it and see how it looks.Was the original finish oil or varnish on these?

  It sure seems to me that it was a regular oil finish. But my memory sometimes tricks me.
