What a sexy old bird........
........... I am. I heard an old hoot (great horned) owl make an inquiring call when I was taking the pup out. I told my son to come out on the porch and listen. I started answering that old bird back. Boy oh boy did I get that dude excited. He was trying to hone in and hunt me down. I had him within 30 yards. He's still hanging around the place hooting.
My son shook his head and said " my dad talks to owls". I told him he can learn a lot from an old bird
i guess it's been 15 years or more since I did that with an owl. I don't run coon hounds anymore so I don't hang out in the woods at night. I got a kick out of it.

An old Indian tale about seeing an owl while out hunting means you mine as well return to the TP and get some more shut eye.
Had a great horned owl land in a tree right above my shooting lane during a morning deer hunt. Never saw a deer that day so I recon those old Injuns knew a thing or two!0 -
Owls are pretty good eating too...not as good as wild turkey though.
Taste a lot like eagle.0 -

I remember growing up as a kid one night when my Dad came home with an owl stuck behind the spare tire that was mounted on a late 60's Ford pickup. Man was that thing pissed. Dad didn't want to shoot it because the radiator was behind it, so he whacked it with a stick a few times and that took care of it...Sure seemed big to a 5 y/o kid... 0
