    Checked my 3rd edition S&W standard catalog and it doesn't decode that SN.

    What type of gun is it and are you sure that is the correct number?

    S&W records are somewhat inexact for those serial numbers with a 3 alpha prefix.

    Based upon what little data we have in SCSW for that period, my opinion is that your gun was made in or before September 2003, or any time thereafter.

    It's a 642, and the serial number is correct. See pictures.

    Somewhere between 1997-2001. By what I see as a date code doesn't make sense to me. If it has all of the factory paperwork, there should be a fired case with a date on it inside.

    Mr Nunn according to my copy of "The Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 4th edition" page 491 your 642 was made the 9th day of January 2000. I don't know how accurate this is but I do know that if you call S&W customer service 800-331-0852 with the serial number they will give you an exact date.

    The supica and nahaus 4th edition S&W book has a prefix decoding chart - not an easy to interpret format - can be confusing...

    Smith seemingly at random applied 3 letter prefixes to revolvers - and while in alphabetical order it skips around - or skips over letter combinations...

    As an example they might have AAA AAB AAC then AAW for no reason I can decipher.

    Smith did allow some buyers to choose their initials as the prefix - Wilson has a half dozen different models with his initials as the prefix...

    Certain blocks of letters were set aside for military or law enforcement or government agency only and we're not duplicated except for one of these specific contract purchase runs

    I have searched the prefix data base and tried the decipher software - I can find your prefix nowhere - but that does not mean trouble it just means I am to stupid to figure it out.

    I am told you can send an email to Smith with your serial number and make / model asking them to date code the prefix - and that it often yields a positive definitive answer.

    So called experts disagree on the letter prefix interpretation violently - some say it's random and some say you could select it and some note agency or military runs

    I know for a fact that some distributors had special configurations or finishes or grips marking special limited models only available through them and they each had their own prefix

    I am sorry that I don't have an answer but I thought this might help clear things up.
