Morning deer hunt.
I'm getting my gear ready to go in the morning. I made sure I had a pen in the pack to write out the "temporary tag" when it's needed. I usually just make extra copies of my license then write down the harvest date, sex, etc. Which brought to mind that I didn't have a license to make copies of. Fortunately you can buy a license online now and print them off. So that's taken care of. I seriously came close to going in the morning without a license.

Thanks. I'm hunting private ground so I'm taking a rifle. I have Tikka T3 lite in 300 wsm. I have other rifles but this one is all it's marketed as and I have tons of ammo for it. 0 -

I still remember my grandfather had a concrete deer in the front yard - and it getting shot at every year - grandma would dress it in an orange vest and hat and it still got shot up...
Grandpa said he remembered as a boy taking orange spray paint and printing cow or horse on the sides of livestock in big letters - or putting them in barns on the first day or two of the season...

I can imagine a field full of cows with cow on their sides or bunch of horses with "HO" 'cos dude sprayed the letters too big

I've fired this rifle three times in the field. Killed two bucks and a coyote. This year I've bought a three tag bundle, good for one buck and two antler-less or three antler-less.0 -

Tell me you can't picture a group of good ole boys all liquored up on opening day trying to load a spotted dairy milking cow or a horse into the bed of a pick up or mounted across the hood...
Just laughing it up about how funny they are.
I imagine if you do an internet search about painting COW or HORSE or OXEN on livestock during the season you will get no small number of pictures...
Timex the concrete deer would get lovingly repainted every year by my grandmother - their house was set back 25 yds from the street and the deer about halfway between the curb and the front door...
I was always amazed that some idiot shooting from inside his truck out the window at a deer on a residential from lawn in front of the house - fronting the street would actually hit the deer and not the house...
Eventually grandpa would set up a duck blind and mask the deer from view of the street...
Grandma said it was not fair to fence him in and block his view - she would use quick Crete to patch the craters left by bullets and buckshot and slugs just like Spackle on a rusty car...
Arrows and crossbow bolts would found at the deer's feet each year - tips blunted.

Got my 1st deer this afternoon. Adult Doe. There were three of them could've easily gotten a 2nd.
Spotted a nice big buck this morning but didn't get a shot at him.0 -
I don't have a pic to post (yet) but I can tell you that I didn't fire a shot today yet I'm as happy as anyone could possibly be. My blind Veteran hunter (USMC Gunnery Sargent wounded in Iraq) made a one shot kill on a management buck this evening. I don't wish to denigrate anyone's successful hunt but give some extra credit where it's due.
I'll go hunting for myself tomorrow before I begin the 250 mile drive to get him headed home.0 -
