New (to me) Pump added to the collection -

Picked it up today. Nothing spectacular. Not a bad deal. $210 all in for a pre-64 (re-badged) Mossberg 500 in 20ga. Slick action. In pretty good shape.
I like pumps. Did not have one in 20ga.
Now I do.
Seller was excellent, by the way. (SCOUT5) Bought the hastings barreled 1100 from him, as well. (Due to a Sam06 link.)

I can never keep a model 12. Every time I get one someone comes along and offers me quite a bit more than I have in it and away it goes.
I have two 20ga pumps, an 870 and an Ithaca. The Ithaca is a slick little pump gun, corncob forearm and light.0 -
Select-a- choke and trigger shoe and ring grooved fore end in 20 gauge...
Nicely found and well bought.
Could easily become a tactical pistol gripped heat shielded combat gun or a shotgun scoped slug gun...
A laminated stock set with a thumbhole grip and a red dot maybe???

Smitty- VERY nice. I have a 3" 12 ga, 20 ga. and a mod. 42 (410). Unfortunately I had ribs put on all of them MANY years ago. Must have 1,000 shots thru both the 12 ga. (ducks) & the 20 (doves and pheasants). Great guns. 0 -

I have a Winchester 1897 that has a 28" barrel with a select a choke device and a vent rib...
The butt stock has an adjustable cheek piece and a butt plate / pad that can be adjusted somewhat for cant and height and OAL...
I bought it because it was an early production receiver and I had thoughts of making a MIL spec trench gun or a cowboy action 3 gun shoot piece...
I got a smoking deal on it because buyers of Winchester shotguns especially model 12 and model 97 seem to be purists and perfectionists...
I actually used the gun for a whole season of trap shooting - it fit me well and despite being a heavy gun it seemed to soak up the recoil...
Apparently abicrombie and Fitch and Griffin and Howe and other higher end sportsmans shops did such conversions though I can find no definitive markings or proofs - I suspect a decent gunsmith did mine for a customer order...
When I would do the trap shooting circuit especially the DuPont country club people would react badly to the conversion - it being akin to heresy in their eyes or a crime against humanity...
I have one that is done up as a trench gun and one that is set up for cowboy / SASS shooting both using after market reproduction parts on basket case normal model guns with solid receivers...
So having a trap shoot variant made sense to me...
I have big hands and had to be cautious about grip orientation to avoid tearing the back of my hand up with the bolt...
The other two I could sell for a profit - the trap gun I would be better off selling just the action with no bbl or furniture...
Never saw a gun that generated so much critical trash talk or ire.

Sounds very much like my 1920 1897. (Take down.) 30" full choke barrel. Professionally hot blued, replacement mahogany furniture by Boyd's. Destroyed the collector value, but I wanted a shooter. This gun looks brand new.
$350 on GB, quite a few years ago. I consider it one of my better deals/acquisitions.0 -
The gun in question sat on the shelf in the gunshop for 12 years...
It was the last open item in one of the shops FFL bound record books and the shop owner sold it to me for $300.00 - tag price had been $695.00
I don't want to imagine how much money such custom work would cost today - in my estimation the gun was customized in the late 60's
I like it but it angers folks.

I still have my great grandpa's old Winchester 1897 with a 30" barrel that I used to use shooting in SASS matches. Great old gun. He used it quail hunting a lot before his stroke in the mid 30s.
I should also add, that in the picture you can see his pocket watch chain on his vest. I still carry his pocket watch daily when I go any place. Great running old watch that was made in 1897.0
