Opening Day of Firearm Deer Season

Well, here in Michigan the season starts at sunrise tomorrow morning. I think I am ready, except for the nearly 3' of snow that is on the ground and baby, it IS COLD outside!!! :shock:

One of the fairly rare starts where our weather has given us more tracking snow than needed! Wish I could dial things down a bit but this year I am really in need of some fresh homegrown venison! I have a private land doe permit and have never really been into antlers too much except to make chew toys for the dogs that seem to really like me! :D

Anyway, wish me luck and if anything exciting takes place out in my backwoods, I will keep you all posted!

    Shot a nice 8 pointer this morning in the back yard. He was between the house and my garage. Shucked the No 2's out of the 870 and was loading it with No 1 buckshot as I rounded the end of the house. He turned to go to the woods instead of running in front of me. Dropped it like a rock.

    I'm ready for a MI UP opener tomorrow also. Temps going to skyrocket to 27 degrees on opener after touching zero and below a couple times this week. Got about 6 inches of powder and it should be a nice day in Gogebic county.

    our opening day is thanksgiving week, rut will be over by then, they have been going strong all this week chasing does and fighting amongst themselves, should bring the timing of the second rut right into our muzzleloading season them big boys are a little sidetracked when they are chasing tail..........

    just got back from checking my trail camera, I have one of the widest 10 points I have ever seen in wva on it 3 days in a row, hope he hangs around till opening morning....

    Hillbillie, after many years of trying to figure out whitetail deer, I have a new opinion. I believe the bucks, big and small, hang around their home range during the peak of the rut. As things cool off, the big bucks start roaming to see what else is out there. The last few years, we have killed the biggest bucks during the last part of rifle season. Bucks that no one has seen up until that time.
    Of course, I?m probably way off in that thinking.

    I agree wholeheartedly, we usually see some really big ones in muzzleloading season when the second rut comes in,some we have never seen, I think for the same reason as you said, a lot less does in heat and the big ones start roaming around looking for them and come out of their favorite hiding spots.......

    Rifle Deer opens up tomorrow for Missouri.

    I bought some fancy Federal 165gr Trophy Bonded Tip for my Springfield M1A. Checked my sights with 3 shots on paper yesterday. 2 shots went purt near into the same hole. Elevation / windage looks good.

    Been seeing deer almost everyday around the house. Hoping to see them tomorrow.
