We used to live in Lowell Massachusetts...
We had a widowed neighbor lady whom was an unofficial aunt but not related.
So she hears a loud banging crashing noise in the middle of the night - and calls the police. Turns out a bowling ball sized conical shaped object punched a neat hole through the detached garage roof and then through the trunk lid of her mercury cougar - it blew the tire to bits and excised one exhaust pipe - did not touch the gas tank by some miracle and imbedded itself in the concrete slab floor...
The roof was smoldering and smoking but not on fire.
Several police cars and a fire truck and an ambulance and a public works road truck arrived over the course of the morning...
A news truck was dispatched when somebody called the story in to the local affiliate.
Initially they authorities stated that it was part of an aircraft - a piece of a plane that fell off - possibly from one of the planes at the nearby air national guard training facility...
So a team from the military showed up as well as the FAA - who decided it was not aircraft related - was not ordnance and was not radioactive...
Her car insurance company was uncertain how to respond or if her car was covered - and would need a definitive cause of action to classify any potential claim...
A team came out from the not so close state university science department and they opined it was an inert meteorite - and eventually they offered to fix her car and garage if she signed over the rights for scientific research purposes...
She while somewhat dismayed about the damage and nobody stepping up to take responsibility was quite enjoying making coffee and cake and cookies and lemonade and such for all the nice uniformed young men...
She signed the releases and unusually rapidly the car was towed and repaired and the garage fixed - they put a while new roof on it and they put 4 new tires on her mercury even replanted her flower bed where everyone had trampled through it looking at things...
The local affiliate reporter did a nice little piece on the response to the little old widow ladies plight - and he even wrote a nice above the fold story for the local newspaper - all of which got picked up by the network...
He had an interest in science and history and he covered the university and a paper mill and dairy farm amongst other things - it was a big deal to him and got him some regional attention.
Jump forward a few months and he is covering a story about the university science department getting some new equipment and adding a small building - based on their sale of a meteorite to a prominent collector at auction.
Turns out the meteorite was almost sold lanthinide series metals and weighed in about 38 lbs.
A big stink was made locally about it because the work they did for the ladies property amounted to about 2% of the sales price of the object...
There were lawsuits filed and injunctions and such - even the auspices of criminal charges suggested...
Settles out of court and the widow did quite well - as did her lawyer I am certain.
Pretty dirty deed and underhanded activity IMHO.
Platinum and gadalinium and some rare earth magnet materials were apparently pretty pricey and much sought after for specialized industrial needs.

Meteorites can be quite valuable - or not. Stone meteorites that are found but not witnessed to fall can be worth as little as 50 cents a gram, while witnessed falls of metallic meteorites can sell for as much as $1000 a gram! 0 -
