Any CPAP Mask User's, with a Beard?
Kinda got spoiled once they got my mask dialed in after a few hours. (Wed. night.) Finally felt like I could breath. ("Hey, this is great!") Dropped off for a few glorious hours of sleep. (But) I found that my goatee/beard was seriously annoying being rubbed by the mask. (Lower chin area.)
Thinking I may have to shave it off.
Will keep trying it, once I receive my set up/machine. Hope I can work it out.
I slept like absolute crap last night, after having been on the machine, and experiencing what actually breathing was like (while trying to sleep) for a change. Not having that, after even one night of it, reinforced
the effectiveness of the set up.
I am WAY looking forward to it. (3-4 weeks for insurance to provide the machine/set up, through the local provider I have selected.)

That's me.
I use a full face mask one size bigger than what would be normal.
Got to get the mask into the area above the chin and below lower lip.
This is hard if you got a full thick beard. Had to trim my beard back some.
I also like the masks that put a little pressure on the cheeks right below your eyes..
For me, that makes my eyes close.

I have a beard at this time. I use a Respironics DreamWear nasal pillow system and it is fine with the beard. I guess if I let the mustache get too bushy it would be an issue but as I keep it trimmed it isn't.
This system has the tube at the top of your head. I have found that to be advantages to rest. I do not have the hose rubbing on my body as I turn etc. I tuck the tube under my pillows and along the edge of the mattress and the end with the mask is in the center of the bed. This keeps the tube from flopping around when I turn, which I do often as my back has issue. I do Have to reposition the head gear occasionally if I move much. It's just plain asking a lot to keep elastic gear in place on a round head, but that is part of it.
I started with a nasal mask and it worked okay but the tube was an annoyance so i went to the system I have now. You have to keep your mouth shut and that takes a little time to get used to. Where I live it usually isn't that dry and I have found it easier to use my CPAP without the humidifier. Not keeping up with the humidifier takes a lot of time out of using the CPAP. If you heat with wood I assume you keep some water on the stove for humidity, if not that would be an issue. If I lived in Arizona or somewhere else that was dry I may need the humidifier. But when i went to Arizona at the end of December I did fine without it.
Using a CPAP takes some getting used to, but it is worth it.0 -
Nose broken multiple times. Badly deviated septum. If it passes 20% of what it should, I'd be surprised. Total mouth breather. Nose Pillow, not an option. Discussed this with the tech. the other night.
Mask is the only viable choice.
I was shocked/amazed, (once they got it dialed in.) how much better my breathing was. A Godsend.
Really looking forward to this.
If I got 3 hours sleep last night, I'd be surprised. :? (Compared to sleeping WITH the mask.)
I mean the mask worked. There were no air leaks associated with my goatee. (But) It was seriously annoying. Can't see going through that every night.0 -
I'm using the version that fits over my nose. I have a mustache and needed to get i fitted right to make it work.

Ah... I had my deviated septum worked on and that helped tremulously.
Once you get set up USE it. You may have to get used to sleeping in different positions. You will be a new person.
I'm only on it 5-7 hours at most a night. It's even great for naps.
I don't toss and turn any more and some times wake up stiff from not moving all night. Just stretch (it's good for you any way).

I was told after 60-90 days, you had to present your machine for download. If you could not prove you were using it for 4 hrs + per night, Insurance would Yank it.0 -

You have to fight your way through it for a couple of weeks.

The only thing annoying about the mask, was how it felt rubbing my lower chin area with my goatee.
Everything else was good, after they got it dialed in with the settings. Will have no problem wearing the mask, with the benefits it provided.0 -

It's nice if insurance pays but it isn't mandatory, if it works out that way that's great, if not buy your own. Once you have a prescription from the pulmonologist you can buy what you want. You do want to go back to the doctor for a follow up to make sure you are getting what you need from the machine. I bought my machine and gear without going through the insurance because I bought what I wanted and not what they said I had to get.0 -

I have to see a Nurse Practioner/Dr. After the first 60-90 days. Not only to download data to prove that I have been using it, for the insurance, but to adjust anything (settings) needed.0 -
but insurance also replaces the hose, mask, filter, ect, for the wife it is every 3 months, the VA replaces mine every 6 months, I send the memory card in once a year for them to review, never any questions why about daily use, I miss a day or two a month on average when I fall asleep on the couch or go to cabin and end up staying day or so without it. biggest thing I notice is in the morning when I wake and haven't used it, my mouth is dry and throat sore from snoring........... I also use mine without water, when I used the humidifier I had it on lowest setting and would still wake in morning and have water dripping out of the nasal pillow, haven't notice any real difference since I stopped using the water in the machine, except I figure it has to be cleaner without the moisture in mask and hose.... 0 -
I would suggest trying this one if you have to use a full face, and have a goatee. I have a goatee as well, and this mask is very comfortable IMO.

I also have one of these, but prefer the other one for comfort, and the best seal. Most of the time I use my P10 nasal pillows though.

My wife has a "ResMed" it transmits whenever it's being used by Wi-Fi, it list how long it was on and what pressure was used.0 -

I have a beard and my cpap seals fine with it.
It is the one from the VA that fits from just under my bottom lip to below my eyes. Very soft clear rubber/latex? with soft foam to seal.
The VA has really nice cpap machines and supplies.0 -

I've not gone to the VA for anything, since I got out in 1984. (Not one time.) Ever.
I believe I should change that.

One I used the other night was a "Memory foam," mask. When I asked to take it with me, based on a friends description of what took place, previously. I was told, "we have to turn it in to Insurance, to prove it was used." (Then destroyed.)

I have a couple new German masks. I like them because the canister is on your left cheek, so you can still get a good cheek weld to your stock.
When the tech was first fitting my mask to me, (we had talked a fair amount when he was checking me in with all the paperwork, and results of my 1st overnight.) Both Vets. He asked me, are you going to be OK with that on? Claustraphobic?

If the one you used had memory foam anywhere, it had to be a ResMed AirTouch F20 like I put a link for in my post. It's the only one I have seen with memory foam. All the rest use medical grade silicone where it touches your face.

Yes. I believe that is it.
The Tech. (Donny) said several times, "this is lined with memory foam, seals very nice."
Unfortunately they had to send it back to insurance to prove it was used (1 time!) In order to be destroyed and receive credit for it.
My Co-worker/Buddy had his 2nd overnighter a couple weeks ago at Bristol Hospital, and they gave him his mask, since it could not be used on anyone else. (So) I asked if I could have mine, in the morning as I was leaving. Donny said that he would love to be able to give it to me, but informed me of the Insurance demand it be returned for credit. Ken, I don't have a full beard, but generally have stubble. I sometimes go months without shaving. I get tired of it, shave for a bit, then let it grow out again.
That said, I have a Quattro Mirage full face mask and it generally fits quite well in spite of me changing. https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed-mirage-quattro-full-face-mask-headgear. I also use the new ResMed S10 Elite https://www.resmed.com/us/en/consumer/products/devices/airsense-10-elite.html which I like quite a bit. Once I got the one I have now, it is an autoset model, I haven't had hardly any ear infections. For whatever all that is worth...0 -
