missed a couple squirrells.............

3 outta 4 to be exact, these eyes just don't work with shotgun beads anymore. got one of those cheap chinese holographic sights, one screen reddot, on my turkey 870, looks like I am gonna have to put one on my 28 ga also. none of the misses were much more than 30-40 yards but they were clean misses so out to the range tomorrow to put a sight on the shotgun, I'll get em next time.........

    I missed one with a .22 cb today. Old eyes, iron sights and shooting off hand makes squirrel heads smaller than they used to be. The wind was moving him a little but I should have knocked him out. I'm not going to be to hard on myself but I may have to consider going to a scope for all my .22 shooting.

    You just have to sneak in closer. Most of my shots are within 20 yds.
    My little Sears single shot with 4x scope is deadly if I can find a rest.

    I am one for one, finally got a chance to go for a while Saturday afternoon. I spotted him off to my right, but I couldn't turn that far and squeeze off a good shot. He started coming to my left, little jumps and bounces. The weeds kept hiding his head, or he would stop looking straight at me. A couple times I had the trigger just about pulled enough to go off and he would bound off. He made a mistake stopped on a dead snag a couple feet off the ground. The old Winchester model 62 popped him in the eye. The iron sights seem to be getting a little finer these days, especially with it overcast in the timber.

    I have always been a big believer in 22 rim fire for squirrel. But about 15 years ago I bought a 17 HMR, it is a excellent little round for head shots out to 50 yards and further, just make sure you aim for the head, because it will almost take the head off.

    My concerns about using a rifle for squirrels has to do with where that projectile is going to go after it passes through the critters head. I now enjoy using my high power scoped pellet air rifle.

    that is why I use shotgun, got two nice little 28 gauges, an 870 pump and a remington double barrell. sweet little shooters. I don't have to wait for a head shot on the ground with these, and the grandkids can shoot them also. one of the reasons I went, I need to reload a few shells a little lighter for my granddaughter,and didn't have any empty brass left, figured I might as well shoot a few squirrells as to just kill a pop can or two....

    Hillbille, I have a couple of 28ga shotguns. I bought an old single for kids to squirrel hunt with. A little better range than the .410 and with 3/4oz loads not much recoil.

    Yes, that is a concern if there are houses around. Sometimes you have to wait for a safe shot.
    A .22 Short hollowpoint will not travel far through tree limbs, but you can?t take any chances.
