I broke down and did it!! Got myself a Hi Point!

I spend a lot of time in my detached garage. On occasion I find myself in my garage and realize my carry piece is in my bedroom. Yeah, I know, but I have never claimed thinking was my long suite!! :lol: The solution is a dedicated garage piece right where I can reach it.

OK, something to be in my garage 24/7 in South Carolina humidity laying under an oil soaked rag just waiting for me to need it. A need I hope I never have. So I could put one of my Ruger's, Smith's, Browning's, Sig's etc. in my garage. "Oh hell no!" This piece has to be a piece that I wont go nuts if it ends up with a little rust on it. Translation, gotta be CHEAP!!

So I got a 40 Hi Point, NIB, $160.49 including tax, out the door. That's cheap. And butt ugly. And heavy enough, if all else fails, beat whatever the problem is to death! :D

In the Hi Point's defense there were a bunch of pieces very similar in being butt ugly to the Hi Point except the prices were $400 to $600. Damnation, some of these weapons are not decent looking. Probably not as heavy either! :D

I ran one mag thru it, hit very close to where I was aiming and all that weight made it feel like I was shooting a light recoiling 9 MM.

I think I'm going to be happy with my new garage gun and if I'm not, I sure didn't loose much!! :lol:

    Bought one years ago on FleaBay...What a crapper! Sold it to a cop in Phoenix for double the money...(even told him it is a POS!)... :roll:

    The Hi Point is probably the ugliest gun ever designed, a barreled brick, but I'll be danged if they don't go bang every time you press the trigger.

    Nope, they're not perfect. They ain't near as purty as my Glocks!

    I think the hate towards HP is that they are cheap, ugly, and just work. Sometimes more reliably than a brand new Colt or similar.

    I bought a broke Hi Point for 15 or 20 dollars. It was a 9mm. I called them and told them that the mag release was bad and they asked me if i wanted to send the pistol in to be repaired or if i wanted to fix it myself.

    I told them i bought it broke and did not expect them to fix it for free and the sent me about 5 different parts for free with next day delivery.

    They are butt ugly and if i am not mistaken the mag release part was made of lead which made it wear out faster than normal but they have super great customer service.

    However i will not pay more than 4o0 or 50 dollars for one.

    I have posted about this before but me and a buddy was at a show and one table had new hipoint 45 acp for $129 , he bought one just to see how much abuse it could take before falling apart .. never cleaned it , never oiled it and fed it everything we could find including reloads bought at the same show.. we quit counting at 1000 rounds ,, it stovepiped twice on the reloads.. he cleaned and oiled and its in his boat today

    a BIL bought one many years ago and maybe one of my sister has one a few years back her husband and her both bought low end pistols to keep with them self . sometimes cash determines what you have . would I want one maybe just to keep in the garage or shed in a pinch even as the house gun
    sometimes just seeing a gun will denture a possible bad situation .
    I look them as a inexpensive way to protect oneself they are heavy ugly but seem to go bang when the time comes .


    as a side note many years ago I bought a group of the Jennings 380 pistols ( assorted finishes not that it mattered but I let everyone pick out what they wanted before I got them ) I gave them away as Christmas presents with a box of ammo to several+ family members , I explained it was not a use every day or a target gun by no means but practice ( if you need more ammo just ask) get the feel and at least you will have some comfort in being protected ..
    I was 99% sure noe would ever be used in a have too shoot situation , but the comfort and security feeling they gave was well worth the 50 or 60 bucks they cost ( dealer cost at the time )

    My Barn gun is a bolt action 12ga. I wipe it down and clean it 2 times a year. I think I paid $60 for it at a garage sale.

    I must admit I have never shot a HiPoint or even held one in my hand so I cannot comment on their function or feel but they are ugly.

    That is it exactly.
    Over the years, I have seen close to a hundred Hi Points at a number of ranges and they all work and shoot just as accurately as Glocks, SW, SIGs, and Berettas. Yeah, they are cheap and ugly ....but they work.

    I find most of the Hi Point haters are those who show up at the range with their custom jobs they paid over 2K for that don't reform as well as they guy next to them shooting a $100 ugly Hi Point.

    One thing don't soak the gun in oil or keep too much oil on a rag around it. The oil will effect the ammo if it gets on the primer.

    I would just clan and oil it and put it in a drawer with a cloth over it. Check it once a month and shoot it every 6 months then clean it and forget it.

    Funny story : A customer came into the shop , had a high point that was found under a house , rusted completely shut , wanted me to 'fix' it , I said i will consider looking @ it : ended up sending it into the factory ? They replaced it with a NEW one ??? Great customer service !!!

    A few years ago : a fellow came into the shop , stated he wanted a (clip) magazine for a hand-gun he had just bought @ the local 'flea market' : I asked him what make / model it was ? H e stated he wasnt sure other than it was a "S&W" , he then went to his car and brought it in : With a Hi Point in hand ! I told him it was a Hi Point : Not a S&W : with a blank look on his face he stated " it says S&W on the side" ! ( Yes it was a 40 cal. ) : Hence it did say 40 S&W on the side !!! Sad thing is : He paid $ 400.00 for it ! was not real happy when I showed him new ones for sale @ $ 169.95 :::

    I'd say he was unhappy because he was blind and stupid. Can't help but defend Hi-Point on that one. :roll:

    Probably cost them a lot more to ship a new gun that it did to make it in the first place. :D Bob

    l read a few years back it cost Glock $62 per gun to make them at their Smyrna Ga plant... That's roughly 12% on a $500gun... Assuming High Point is as efficient as Glock, then 12% would be about $20 on a $160 HiPo :o

    Pretty sure my Ruger LCP which is a copy of a Kel-Tec 3AT cost about the same as that Hi Point.

    Quality isn't really an issue for a "throw down".

    I did see one Hi-Point that suffered a catastrophic dis-assembly. The owner said he'd fired 3 shots and the fourth sent the frame from the trigger guard forward and the slide 20' downrange. He asked if it could be fixed. I felt sorry for him but told him to write it off as an educational expense.
