flashbacks of going to work.......

had to get up early and have hour and half drive to VA appointment early this morning. only good thing was after I got out of the shower it hit me I don't have to go to work, gonna throw the golf clubs in the truck and play a round on the way home, there are a few nice course up that way just never really wanted to drive hour and half to play, but as long as I am there may as well make a day of it. worst part was I was dreaming about work right before the alarm went off.......

    I have been retired 10 years now and still dream of zoo work and reptile collecting. Somedays I wake up exhausted. Then I remember I can now shop guns all day. :D

    For about the 1st year after retirement I always felt like I was running late in the mornings as if I had over slept. Now that it's been about 5 years I can barely remember the name of the company I worked for. I really don't know how I had time to go to work.

    It hasn't happened in several months, but I have had nightmares/dreams about being back at work, being called in and ordered to work because the PD is short-staffed. (It is.) The nightmares were mainly involving this HORRID Spillman police reporting software. It is THE most quirky, counter-intuitive and stupidly designed software I have ever encountered. Make an arrest, and a report that once took 20-30 minutes, now takes about 90 minutes, if you're lucky.

    I wrote a bunch of reports with it, but never got through an arrest without having to ask for help. Spillman generates a number for the arrest, then you have to put that number back in to find the subject's file. So, I put the number in and every time, it would bring up someone else's file.

    A few times, I wrote lengthy report narratives for very involved crime reports. When I went to submit the report, I found that my narrative had disappeared! I had to do it over, and it disappeared again. So, I did it a third time. When I complained, I was told it is a "connectivity" problem, and the "fix" for that is to just write the narrative in WordPad and save it, then copy and paste it into Spillman. That way, if Spillman lost it, I'd still have it in WordPad.

    It was the damnedest thing I ever saw and I don't see how we ended up with it unless there were some serious kickbacks somewhere. If this were a fair world, someone would be in the penitentiary over it.

    Back to the nightmare. There's less than an hour left in a 12-hour shift, and I get dispatched to a call where I will have to make an arrest. Shoplifter, family violence, warrant service, etc. Driving over to the call, I get angrier and angrier, knowing that no one from the oncoming shift will volunteer to take my arrest, and knowing that I am not even supposed to be here.

    Getting an arrest at the end of an 8-hour shift is an inconvenience. Getting an arrest at the end of a 12-hour shift is a major pain in the posterior.

    I know "hate" is a strong word, and often over-used, but I really, HATE Spillman Technologies! And I have little regard for whichever idiot was sold this bill of goods.

    Transitioning from work to retirement was one hell of an adjustment, but I made that adjustment on my way to the parking lot. :D
