gunpowder question
browsing the VihtaVuori website. it tells about their different powders. they also list loads for different cartridges. checking out the .40 page,

that is with a 5.5" test barrel. however, their max loads are nowhere near what I have seen with actual very hot factory ammo.
this is what I would estimate the hottest ammo (not +P) to be capable of with a 5.5" barrel:
135 grain, 1480 ft/s
155 grain, 1290 ft/s
165 grain, 1210 ft/s
170 grain, 1185 ft/s
180 grain, 1110 ft/s
200 grain, 1000 ft/s
except for three examples on that whole page, none of them come close. why is that?

I didn't click the link, but possibilities include:
They don't have a powder that's optimum for that cartridge (most likely).
They load to a different pressure standard and/or use different pressure measurement methods.
The "very hot" loads you list may be just that.0 -
I noticed the max loads are very close to their starting loads.
Could they be playing "safe" for unsupported chamber guns??0 -
I agree with Rocky
The ignition/burn rate of that powder is not optimized for the 40 case and range of bullet weights.0
