I was good to me
Went out looking for some shepherd pie, there didn't seem to be any around and I was hungry. Close to where I am staying was a walk up chicken and rib place. But it had bars on the windows and a pass through set up for the food, as did the liquor store across the street. I decided I might better drive to another area.
There's a lot of streets empty of eating establishments here in Battle Creek. I finally got on a thorough fare that looked hopeful. I was pretty hungry, so at this point if they served food I was stopping. I finally spotted a Popeye's chicken joint. I was in the left lane and couldn't make it to the right lane in time so I drove on past to turn around. That is when I passed a place named, IIRC, Finley's grill and smokehouse. Looked decent and much more inviting than Popeye's.
I pulled in and there were only a couple of cars in front. I drove around back and the parking lot was about full. Not only that there was a couple getting out of their truck and heading in like they wanted to be there. Walked on in and seen a fellow that looked like he knew what good cooking was all about, I was sure I had chose well. The hostess showed me to a seat, there weren't many open, so good timing on my part.
I just had one of the best meals I have had for awhile. Started off with a local brewed Red Irish Ale, which was excellent, and a small loaf of dark rye bread with butter. Then my meal of smoked prime brisket served over grilled bread, mixed steamed vegetables, cole slaw and a corn muffin. My my, the brisket was awesome. The waitress brought me a six pack of assorted sauces and I told her she could take them back, i wasn't messing this cut of beef up with sauce. Followed that with a big slice of cheesecake, strawberry topping (looked and tasted fresh made) and a cup of black coffee.
Some good eats right there.
Glad I found the place.

Sounded like a great place and meal. Possibly better than possum pie with all the fixings.
If the waitress was hot then it was a 100% score.
Guess Battle Creek is like a lot of other mid size cities, ? Lots of empty buildings.0 -

I was not disappointed.

Was (and have been) jonesing for a good Philly style Cheese Steak. I would get about one a week up North. (One of the few things I miss about up there.)
Decided to pick up the phone, and call in an order to Mikes BBQ. I have been hearing for a while they also had killer Subs. Asked "Do you have Philly Cheese Steak subs?" We have Cheese Steak Subs. "Can I get a Cheese Steak with grilled onions, green peppers and mushrooms?" We do not have green peppers or mushrooms. (Damn. Gave it some thought, decided to proceed.) "Okay, start one for me. Oh and put an order of fries on it." You want a side of fries with it. "No I want an order of fries ON the Sub. Whatever does not fit, add it to a seperate bag." (Shocked silence.) You want fries on the Sub. "Yes, Maam." Well we will just put fries in the bag, you can put them on the Sub if you would like. "Okay" - while slapping hand to forehead. :roll:
You want ketchup on that Sub? "No Maam." Well, mayonnaise then? "No Maam, only salt and pepper."
(Ketchup or mayonnaise on a Cheese Steak?) Sacrilege. "What are you a bunch of Hillbillies?" Oh Sorry. That didn't come out loud did it? :shock:
It was good, but not great. I know where you can actually get a good Philly Cheese Steak down here, but it is about 30-45 minutes away. Not in a direction I usually travel or pass. I may just have to get over that way.0
