The CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods said the company destroyed more than $5 million worth of assault-style rifles following its decision to stop selling the weapons amid pressure on retailers from gun control groups.
Ed Stack told CBS News during an interview that aired Sunday that the millions of dollars worth of inventory was turned into scrap metal.
"I said, 'You know what? If we really think these things should be off the street, we need to destroy them,'" he said.
It was not clear how much destroying the weapons cost the sporting goods giant.

I assume the CEO cleared this with the board of directors? As a publicly held corporation they have a fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders. And I would be willing to bet many of us are unknowingly shareholders through our retirement accounts.

It would have been hypocritical to sell them, return them for money, etc.
While I do not think it was a smart decision, I will respect the organization for taking a loss (meaning you and I will get to pay for around 20% with our tax dollars) if that is what it takes to stand by their beliefs.0 -

Ignorant decision by inept management. Playing a song for the media and getting their two minute commercial, but the media won't be buying anything from Dicks and now they have even furthered their commercial base and driven away more possible customers. They will be gone in a few years but I bet the management will get their millions.
Field & Stream as stated above is owned by Dicks.? How sad. I remember subscribing to their magazines and thumbing through all the stories and articles about hunting and fishing. I miss that kind of stuff and I know it will never return. Sad chapter.0 -

Vincent DeNero - the editor of Firearms News - had an article in volume 72 - issue 10 --- about DICK'S and Field & Stream stores and the CEO - Ed Stack. He was not very "kind". From the article - "As for me, I wouldn't buy a pair of shoe laces at DICK'S, nor would I go to Field & Stream, even if they were passing out free ammo."
