This might make too much sense
but why doesn't our government force convicted convicts to "WORK" (not only for their room & board) but to be productive in improving something in this country

Here in Indiana prisoners work. I am sure there are some that don't for one reason or another but most do. They make a lot of things for use in the prisons across the state, toilet paper for example, as well as other jobs. I guess they still make the auto license plates, I know they use to. Of course some of them work in road clean up crews and park maintenance crews. 0 -

I know here local we have done away with the local city/county jail, we have regional jails now and if they need a work crew it takes 3 deputies to pick up/transport, watch them, that is 3 county deputies/city cops off the beat just to watch convicts pick up trash or some such, then has to feed them ect. bottom line is it just costs to much, I say bring back the chain gangs for the non violent offenders and fix some potholes and mow some roadsides that are being overlooked to save money....... maybe they will think twice next time before they commit a crime if they know they will have to sweat it off.. 0 -
Our county sheriff utilizes labor from the regional jail. The mow and weedeat county property, work at the school bus garage, etc. A shotgun wielding deputy is with them at all times. The regional jail is not a nice place to hang out at. Crowded, uncomfortable, and boring. The cons volunteer to just get outside. They work seven days a week, weather permitting.
The trustys are guys that wrote bad checks, back child support, possession, etc.
Last year, a couple of them stole a county car and took off. One was serving less than a year and the other had two weeks to go on his sentence. Not the brightest of criminals.0
