revolving rifle

10-3-19 7am Paladin western rerun....shootem up on main street one of the bit players had a revolving rifle...Colt had one called a ROOT model that was blackpowder cap and ball ...this went past to fast to see if that was one or a hollywood mixup gun?????....did not get the title of this rerun segment... seems like the first one i can remember seeing in a western movie.....

    Didn't Smith have one also.? I was watching an old western the other night on a disc pack, spaghetti style ones and they had broomhandles and using them.!

    in one of the john wayne movies, rio lobo, or rio bravo, his deputy bull carried one, think this was the robert mitchem movie.......... sorry it was el derado? and it was colt 1855 revolving rifle

    Yes, El Dorado . I have a Colt Root 1855 revolving rifle and remember the scene from the movie.

    Regarding those early cap & ball revolving rifles, anybody ever encounter a "chain fire" with one of those ?

    Holding your left hand and arm out in front of those cylinders while aiming and shooting could ruin your day! :o:(

    like to have a replica of one of those sidehammer revolving rifle/revolver in centerfire ammo with octagon barrel....been trying to figure out how to make one..have a taurus 22 mag rifle....took the barrel off and closed up the cylinder gap to 0.003-4"......

    The New York State Military Museum where I retired from , has several revolving rifles and carbines. Most are Colts, but there is one called a Porter. The cylinder of the Porter is about five inches in diameter and 1 1/2 inches thick. It rotates on an axis in line with the barrel and stock.

    If you have a chain fire with a Porter, one of the loaded cylinder is in line with your forehead. It would totally ruin your day. Forth gun down on this web site....
