Did that once, 25 years ago, with the gas piston return spring in an SKS. Never found it, and I spent hours looking. It's either still in that area, which is now a parking lot, and gone for good, or, at the velocity I believe it left the rest of the gun, still going, roughly in the area of Proxima Centauri by now.

Either build a box with one side plexiglass and the rest plywood, or use one of the ~5gal water jugs that are clear and cut ends off.

Put holes large enough for hands and a pistol or AR receiver or whatever you commonly work on. Go to drugstore, find Theraband for sale buy a few feet. Cover side holes with two pieces over lapping an inch or two, and stretch it tight enough to stay shut on own but loose enough to let you insert your hand and chosen gun part(s).

Closed, you can view inside, and anything that goes sproing is in a small enclosed area and should be easy to find.

I'd hate to see what the rest of your shop looks like! Instead of stubbing a toe you chop one off!

Not to offend the Religious members here, but that's called a Jesus spring, " Jesus, where did that go. "
