A reply in a recent Wal~Mart thread stated that a greeter had told a GB member that theft has increased exponentially with the proliferation of self-check out. Wal~Mart, Target, Meijer, and Kroger are stores using it around here, I'm sure there are others.
Surely the corporate people in retail knew that unsavory types would take advantage of this situation, so how did they do the math?
Did they accurately predict the increase in shrink and decide the savings in labor cost was a bargain?
I think it more likely they overestimated the ability of the sales associates to stop shrink from happening.

I really hate the self serve check outs. I find a sort of Karma in all of these problems.
Today I saw one of those picture jokes online and it was captioned "Employee of the month" with a picture of a self serve checkout station.

I use self checkout at my local grocery store all the time.
And I live in NJ were it's illegal to pump your own gas and you must pay at the pump.

Go to any Walmart in Houston with their app on my phone. Open the app and it will say the name of the store and then you can scan any item and get the price, PLUS there is a function to "find' an item and it will give you the shelf location in the store. This function is not always accurate but it will be pretty soon. 0 -

will not use self check...i have my items in order together with bar code up so they can use the scan gun and besides ..NO checkout in a walmart has ANY marking where and which way the HELL to stick a credit card.....secret slot....if a paid person cannot check it out i will leave the cart there.... 0 -

I tell them that all the time, if you can't find a person who will take my money in hand and thank me for shopping I will go somewhere that will and just leave the items in the cart and go. girls at Lowes will now come out of the office if they see me standing there, I refuse to use the self checkout, same at Krogers, that little bouncing ball TV screen at the front of the store with the small numbers in it are for the computer to know how many registers need open, I would rather wait in line than use self checkout, if to many people are waiting in line the computer will reflect this in a report. if there are to many discrepencies the scan % for the day/hour go down and someone has to answer for it. that is why they try to hussle you to self checkout to keep the customer counts right with the wait time. Krogers has heat sensors in the ceiling to gauge how many people are in each aisle and when they will be coming to front/register all this is put in reports and sent to corporate daily.
I put up with this crap the last 5 years or so of my 40 with the company, now I will play the game the other way around, and make them look as bad as possible, doubt corporate will ever give the stores back the hours they need but it is worth a try. And I am just guessing but I would say wally world has about the same setup for time management.0 -
I also eschew the self checkout, and go stand in one of the two open "real person" lanes.
Furthermore, I have this thing against plastic bags. If I have a bag full of stuff....OK. But they like to put
two or three items in a bag then start a new one. And if you say you don't want a bag, they look at you
like you told them you just pooped your pants.
Now, I'm certainly not what you'd call a greenie.
But I don't need my gallon of milk double plastic bagged.
Just the other day I was at W-M . I got a bag of dog food, bag of dog treats, shoe insoles and a new pair of
readers.
Cashier goes to put the stuff in a bag. I say "nope, I don't want that in a bag." The look, OK.
Get out to the greeter. She says "why didn't you put that in a bag? The scanner only counts what you
put in the bag. You have to put that in a bag!" I explained that I went through a human's lane, and
again with the look. But on my merry way I went. Bagless!0 -
I was the one who talked with the " door checker" he has been there for a while and really a nice fellow , he told me a lot of days when the store is busy with just him at the door no way too keep up and check very many leaving so many just get waved by , he said no way does he want to cause hard feeling or a huge back up of customers waiting to be checked as they leave . gets enough crap as is just doing his job .
you can tell he has self pride in his job and to his employer but no way wants to cause issues holding up people wanting to get home
I head a lot of stores on the west coast have stopped doing the self check outs just way too much loss ( what a surprise )
lkie most they have too know its going to happen and had to be a factor in cost of paying employees . insurance . workers comp . people call off for the day(s) and sick days by there associates maybe it all adds up to risk the losses
we also talked about how tempting even to a some what honest person to skip a few items as they bag them up . even a few items bypassing the scanner would add up fast to a family0 -
