I will admit (confession for a non-Catholic) that I did not know the difference between a sloppy joe and a BBQ sandwich until I was at least 30 yrs old!! :o

Grew up being told a MANWICH was BBQ and the lie rooted deeply into my memory banks. (and my taste buds)

Worse than that, cole slaw was never even offered as a topping let alone as a side dish unless it was chicken from KFC!

From all of this, being led down the wrong path regarding fine cuisine, I always used to deny BBQ as a choice even when the real deal was made available to me later in life. So here you have it. NO. I do not eat slaw on a BBQ sandwich. Out of ignorance, not because I'm a Michigander.

Answering this question, will allow me to determine if you are from the South, or not.

    What say Ye?

Never heard of doing such a thing........and I traveled the south quite a bit.

Well, you really have to live there to get the full experience. After a few years, even a "Damn Yankee" import like myself learns the nuances of BBQ, cornbread, hush puppies, catfish, greens, grits, and purple hull peas. But not a drive through tourist.

Slaw yes, but on the side please. Also a good BBQ place leaves it to the customer to choose BBQ sauce and how much.

Best BBQ in NC LOL LOL LOL

HAHAHAHA SC has them NC Q joints beat hands down.

Either Sweatmans in Holy Hill or if you like Mustard based sauce Piggy Park or Bessingers.

I never could keep NC or SC straight - both talk kind of funny. Glad I got the name of the place right, been a while. And damn it was humid down there.

May we assume that you've never eaten a mustard-based pork BBQ?

You know what they say, when you "assume?"

By the way, I just finished off a Mikes BBQ sandwich, with Slaw.

Had one for lunch today as well. (At work.)

It should be noted that coleslaw on a BBQ sounds just as horrible as an egg on a hamburger.

Yes egg on hamburger sounds bad, ever eat one fixed like that?

For me no coleslaw, although my sister in-law makes the best spicy coleslaw.
The best pulled pork BBQ Sandwich was Brady and Lyle's in Memphis
Their Sandwich was served on Texas Toast. They called their sandwich "Ambrosia on a Bun"; it was that good. It had to be because you took your life in your hands going there after dark.
The best pork rib BBQ is Cozy Corner in Memphis.
The best BBQ beans was Gridleys BBQ in Memphis.

A proper BBQ meal should have Killer BBQ beans and Potato Salad as sides.
Desert is Lemon meringue pie or can be Watermelon.

I have never had any exceptional BBQ East of the Tennessee River

You have never been to Ridgewood. Not chopped or pulled, just hickory and apple smoked hams, sliced paper thin. Order with or without sauce, heated on a grill, with or without slaw.
Double fried French fries, beans, take your breath good, they make a blue cheese dressing and crackers for a appetizer.
And just for all the Yankees that dare, sweet tea.
They also have smoked brisket. Can't BBQ beef.
Memphis, have a friend that is an ATF agent there. There are many places in the city he won't go for fear of life or limb.
Almost forgot, nanner puddin is desert of choice for BBQ joints.

I worked in Charlotte for many years.
Spent time in Raleigh, Winston-Salem area.
Live in the foothills of the Smokeys
Where is Ridgewood? Sounds worth a good try.

I 'm with you on the nanner puddin, "Thank you, Thank you Very Much", if its the real thing and not some banana jello concoction,(wife's recipe adds whipped cream and miniature marshmallows), but the tartness of a real Southern Lemon Meringue Pie made with Eagle brand Condensed Milk, a Buttered - Crushed Graham Cracker Crust, and piled high meringue is the perfect finish for tangy sweet BBQ.

Ridgewood is near Bluff City , Tn, not far from Bristol race track.
900 Elizabethton Hwy., Bluff City, Tn., 1-423-538-7543.
Best to check website for hours.
They are not open on Sundays. Little hole in the wall, Mon and Pop operation. Packed almost all the time when doors are open.

I don't eat sandwiches. I so seldom see good BBQ, I have quit looking. One place here has great meat, crappy sauce. Another has great sauce, crappy meat, so BBQ requires two stops. Not worth the trouble to me.

I've heard of it, (in a good way.) Never eaten there. I have passed by it a few times, when on jobs about 6 years ago, but could not stop.

Yes, always packed, everytime I passed by.

    The sign of good BBQ.

Don't get over that way much anymore.

Thank goodness I live about an hour away and hardly ever make it there. Maybe three times a year at most.
By the way I am forcing down a nice bowl of homemade nanner puddin.
Local magazine called the Tennessee, Mountain Electric edition had the best of the best in several catagories, West, Middle, and East. You guessed it, Ridgewood voted best in east TN.

Better go to Ridgewood first then get the dogs to go.
    They pile the food high.

    Yes.
First time in SC about 9 years ago.
Then learned just how good it is when i was in NC.
It is almost a coin toss when I'm in NC, get to the airport or go and have some more BBQ.
Got stuck in Raleigh four years ago when Chicago was snowed up. Didn't break my heart for an extra day there.
