Dog Food, Venison Source?
Have a couple bags of Purina One, Turkey/Venison blend. (30% Protein.) My dog liked the first bag, blended in with his Diamond Naturals Beef and Rice formula so much, that I bought a second bag for him. (Local store going out of business.) 24lbs for $20. A good deal.
I sample/try my dogs food, to see what he is eating. (Not the moist food boys, settle down.) Just had a piece of dried Venison. Pretty good. I see why he likes it.
Got me wondering, where do commercial entities source Venison from?

I would say deer farms 0 -
commercial deer farms mostly. I don't think commercial food manufacturers can legally obtain wild venison for that. 0 -
Was unaware commercial entities, have access to Deer Farms. I should have known though, Pretty much knew, that comercial entities would not have access to Wild Deer meat.
I usually use other brands rather than Purina One. Tractor Supply 4Health Untamed, Buffalo and Lentil, (a favorite) Diamond Naturals (Chicken, Beef or Lamb) and rice. Etc.
I find Purina One to be overpriced. Took advantage of a local store closing up, got good deals on what I bought. One bag 1/5th consumed, one bag unopened.
Diamond Naturals, available at my local farm store is available for about $35-37 for 33 lbs. High in protein (24-26% protein.) Very natural ingredients, Lots of fruits and veggies. Very little, to no grain. My dog likes it as well.0 -
If you had ever been to a pet food plant you would never sample anything. Back 30+ years ago when I drove a truck we hauled alot of pet food. Purina plants were clean but many had old meat piled in the parking lot in the heat for days waiting to get to the grinder. You could smell them way before you got there 0 -

I sampled the Beneful once. It smells really good when you first open the bag. Then I got this sudden urge to howl when the fire trucks went down the road. 0 -

Neighbor run out of work, bought dog food and ate it to tide him over until he could pick up a new job. Did pretty god until he got hit by a truck, he was licking himself in the middle of the road.

If need be, I could survive on Dog food, if the SHTF. Not too bad protein % per $$. Might even have a bunch on hand.
I would wager a large % of the population, would be more than happy to access it, if given the chance in that scenario.

I was waiting in line at Rural King with a big bag of Purina Dog Chow in my arms when the nice lady behind me saw the bag and asked if I had a dog.
The smart ass that I am, I said no, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that last time I lost almost 50 pounds before waking up in the hospital with a tube coming out of my nose and an IV in my arm.
I told her It really is nutritionally complete making it the perfect diet food. I simply load my pockets with Purina Senior Chow and eat a couple nuggets any time I feel a hunger pain.
She was very concerned and wanted to know what happened, did the dog food make me sick?
I explained that as I approached a crosswalk, without looking, I had stepped off the curb to sniff an Irish Setter?s butt and a car hit us both.
The biker guy behind her was laughing so hard he had a heart attack!
Rural King asked me to pick up my pet food from the loading dock from now on.0 -

when still working in St Louis, we had the job of reparing a set [5] of grinders for Purina. most godawful smell ever, no amount of steam cleaning with caustic detergent added, could remove the odor....sharpshooter039 wrote:If you had ever been to a pet food plant you would never sample anything.
