Hearing Aid ?
I know a few people on GB have hearing aids and or Tinnitus.
I was a crew chief on T-38s and F-16s for a little over 10 years from 1983 to 2003. However i never had tinnitus until 2010 when i turned 45.
In 2010 i got head cancer and between 5 or 6 surgeries, chemo and radiation somewhere i picked up tinnitus.
I have hearing loss bad enough where my doctors wanted me to have hearing aides a long time ago but i just turn the tv up louder which my wife hates.
Now for the last 3 weeks my tinnitus is at a pitch where im about to lose it.
Would hearing aids stop me from having tinnitus?

I posted almost this same topic some time ago. The response was that good quality hearing aids will help. I have not yet determined to spend that much money on the issue.

Dav, get thee to the VA. You will be issued a set of excellent Resound aids that do indeed have some effect on your tinnitus. I'm wearing mine as I type this, having gotten them roughly six months ago. On my first visit and test at the VA, I said that I had flown the T-37 for almost five years. The audiologist simply asked "What color hearing aids do you want?" (I picked AF blue, of course!)
The Resounds are current technology, rechargeable, fully programmable, with three modes (normal, restaurant, and with added white noise - great for naps!) Comes with a small remote control, too. The charging dock is itself rechargeable, and holds enough juice for about three nights of charging the aids, great for travel. The set runs $5k+ at retail. Won't cost you a dime. You paid with your service. In full.
They also gave me a little white noise generator with pillow speakers to help me sleep. Majorly helpful.0 -
Yep - if service related, the VA will provide.
If not service related, I know that WRAMC will provide them at cost. My first pair cost me around $800.0 -
Good to know the possibilities before jumping in. My hearing loss is moderately severe so I have trouble hearing in several situations despite having high quality aids. I needed to get an iPhone 6 in order to download a program that transmits sound by Bluetooth directly to my aids. It also can direct the sound pickup to a particular direction in noisy areas such as restaurants. Also got a wireless Bluetooth transmitter that plugs into the tv so I can hear without room sound from the tv speakers, keeps the wife happy (I also use closed captions all the time). I don't know that anything will diminish tinnitus but well-programmed aids should help in spite of it. I used rechargeable batteries for a while but having to charge at an inopportune time got old, & batteries are really cheap at Costco. My aids were spendy but making do with less was not acceptable. not sure anymore it has to be service related to get the hearing aids themselves, to get the disability compensation it has to be service related, mine cost me my copay, $50 to see the DR and they didn't ask if service related or not, the VA did the hearing test and then just said come pick them up in 4 weeks I am happy just to have the hearing aids and am not going to push for the disability payments............0 -
Hearing aids will help with tinnitus
There are other things that will help also, like white noise machine
Hearing aids will absolutely make a world of difference in your hearing and quality of life.
Please see a Doctor of Audiology !!! NOT, a hearing aid salesman in a tent.

What hillbillie and montanajoe said. The VA gave me my aids no questions asked, along with a sleep noise machine. If you are in the VA system and need hearing aids, they'll provide them. (I also declined the compensation.)
There are a lot of hearing aid shysters out there. If you must buy your own, go to Costco or an INDEPENDENT audiologist, not a hearing aid chain store. Frankly, I'd recommend Costco first. In my experience, their audiologists are top notch and they don't try to sell you product you don't need. When they tested me years ago, the man said he'd be happy to sell me aids but I didn't really need them yet. Refreshing honesty.0
