357?

I have several 38/357s from different manufactures.

I do not have a Colt Python but i do have a Lawman 3 and a Trooper 3 and a S&W 28-3 plus a few more. The others are cheaper than these.

Why is a Colt Python so much better than the three mentioned.

The S&W 28-3 is a really really nice gun.

    Dave IMO the colt Python is over rated as shooting firearm. The action is old and dated again IMO a 686/586 is a better shooting and handling gun and the M27 is even better.


    That said they are pretty and collectable. They are also very smooth shooters.

    As far is are they better than the guns you listed, if you go by price the answer is yes but as a shooter YMMV.

    Don't really understand the pythonomania myself. Certainty they are well made.
    IMHO the SW L frames and their model 28 are more utilitarian and their actions stronger.

    Rumor has it Colt will bring back the Python and would expect prices of the older ones to drop.

    I have time and again largely found that to be the case on all Colt firearms. I have a lot of 1911 10mm firearms, including Delta Elite up to, and including the expensive National Match. All of my Dan Wesson (9) and Springfield's (4) will shoot circles around Colt's best at a fraction of the cost. I am not talking about a single example, all of those named that I have shot outshoot the Colt. There is definitely a nostalgia with Colt, but their being in the elite has long since passed.

    The S&W Model 66 .357 Mag is twice the gun for half the price.

    I am happy with my Dan Wesson 15-VH6 and my Smith and Wesson 13-3 HB and my Great Western SAA clone...

    To be honest the S&W model 13-3 heavy barrel military and police style basic combat handgun is one of my all time favorites...

    One I junked the undersized factory grips and put on a set of oversized Hogue Rosewood finger groove target style monogrips and did some improvements to the trigger it became a wonderfully simple yet accurate point of aim range day gun.

    The python and some of the other colt snake or named wheel guns seem to be the gun owners equivalent of stuffing a sock in your underpants...

    Values are insane.

    Have both and agree 100%. I got a good deal on my Python. A friend of my brother in law needed money to take his wife to Myrtle Beach.

    I have owned 3 Pythons over the years. 2.5" SS, 4" BSS and 6" BSS. They all had smoother and lighter triggers than the S&W and Ruger factory triggers that I have owned and fired. I also had a King Cobra and it was in line with the Pythons. As far as accuracy goes I never shot the Colts enough to get a reading on them as I didn't want to hurt the resale valve. I sold them all off and now I have a 686-1 that has had an action job and I shoot it till the cows come home. Accuracy is outstanding as was my 681 back in the day.

    We shoot our Python. What's the point of a hot wife if ya don't "play nice" together :D
    We shoot all our collection. Like the M/C's - Ride 'em - don't hide 'em
    It is a very accurate and smooth weapon.
    I wouldn't buy one at today's prices but at $325 39 yrs ago I couldn't pass it up.

    Savage, how do you like your Coonan? I have eyed them for years. It is hard to find real, straight information on them. They keep saying they are going to go back into production (again and again).

    I am wanting the Compact / Cadet model. Oddly, I actually bought a couple of magazines in anticipation of buying one. Then, I ended up getting a Bren Ten instead but still have one of these on my list. I have shot the full size one and they certainly fit in the hand better than my Desert Eagle.

    I really like it. Shooting 357 it has been very reliable but is picky with 38 special loads
