Windmill
Just bought an antique windmill! Always wanted one. Gotta go to Bozeman Montana to pick it up in a week or so.

Wow! Just read the post on inserting photos and had to try it.
That was so easy! Way better than before.

still got one here laid down and head covered....rebuilt it years ago for a pond....made a wide turn with a double drill set years ago and bent up the tail piece a little...fixable ...sold off 2 other windmills and have no use for this one..... 0 -

Grew up with one like pictured above and a separate stand-alone water tank, same height, both were a necessity, pump would squeaked like hell and had to put the brakes on to stop the blades from turning whenever a storm came by......often late at night, in the dark...very spooky for kids . Then electricity was invented out our way and freedom from such began 0 -
Friend of mine will buy junk ones and rebuilds them. He does pretty well. He can make new fins out of sheet metal and 'antique' them, you can't tell the difference. 0 -
Our Daughter and SIl some years back worked on a ranch in the Sandhills in Nebraska and it had 65 functioning and pumping windmills on 10 sections.
At the headquarters they had more Aero motor spare parts than I had ever seen.
I?ve kinda always wanted one also, pumping or not.

If you have never "laid down" a tower in one piece, you could be about to get a lesson in physics.
If you already know this, please forgive the lecture.
Take a 40 ft tower, use half inch nylon, tie it off to the bumper of a deuce and a half, use that to belay the tower as you tip it over with a rope running to another truck. You will break the rope, and crash the tower. Once you pass 45 degrees, the leverage on that rope starts to go up. At about 10-12 degrees, it become insanely high. Rope breaks. Oh- you're gonna use wire rope? Heh. It makes a funny sound when it breaks.
Seriously- if you have not done this before, and do not have a strong background in rigging, do some research on this. And lay in a good supply of AeroKroil or PB Blaster.0 -

I see a couple Nebraska references. I don't know his name, but my dad went to school with someone up there that supposedly that is all he had done for 25+ years; rebuild wind mills. I think he is in the Grand Island or Palmer area.
I have always wanted on too, but I want to wait until I have a place with a pond. It has always been my idea to have one that runs and pumps into a pond to keep it topped off during those hot summer months. It might keep that portion of the pond slightly cooler as well, not sure...0 -
My water table is 300 ft. below the surface. I?d have to have a really big one.

I'm in SW Podunk Iowa. Still lots of them around here.
Some guys take them, and attach a generator to them, to charge batteries for lighting, or whatever.
A know a few guys that Knock the tops off, and build a platform for hunting.
Most are locked down, and if the well is still in use under it, has power ran out to it, with an electric pump.0 -

The one I bought is already down and in pieces. Standing it up will be the hard part but I have the right equipment and the

if I had some acreage I couldn't imagine not having one. hell if I had a really big back yard I'd want one. I think they sell 12' decorative windmills.
how about a 40 foot pole attached to the rope. as the windmill goes down, the pole goes up. eliminate the angle.0 -

Okay, I will be picking up the windmill in Belgrade around 3 PM tomorrow. Spend the night in Butte and head home Sunday. Hopefully I won?t get caught up in the ?storm? that is forecast.0 -
