Does anyone else use Rifle Rod storage system? Review of it, the safe, etc.
This may come across as an advertisement though I have no business interest in anything mentioned. I am just happy I have found them and the several safe threads recently made me think to write this up. I guess it is more of an unsolicited review of these products.
I previously had a medium sized (32"w x 72"h) Cannon gun safe with the traditional "double U" shaped interior for the guns to lean up against. Though it was nice, I was completely out of space and had things sitting in closets and such. I bought the Rifle Rods (https://www.storemoreguns.com/gun-safe-accessories/) that I had heard about while shopping to upgrade to a large double-door https://www.bearsafes.net/ safe. They allowed me to finally put everything inside since it uses space more efficiently.
Ultimately I bought the new safe and I have reconfigured the interior several different times/ways but now that I have discovered them, I recommend both to everyone. The Bear Safes are quite plain in appearance, but they are very solid. I was first drawn to them since they are local, they have been around quite a long time, and most importantly, they would build me a safe to my specifications to precisely fit the limited room I had available.
I also put Allen silicone gun socks on all of my nicer rifles to prevent bumping between firearms while getting stuff into or out of the safe. And, I also use Bore Stores (http://www.borestores.com/) on shotgun barrels barrels, and a few odds and ends and even occasionally double-sack a particularly nice firearm. Unfortunately, neither has yet been made with a hole for the Rifle Rod to go through. So, my wife cuts the end of the sock off, sews a button hole, then sews the seam back up. She also shortens them as needed. I have contacted both Allen and Bore Stores to see if they would make them that way but unless I want to buy them by the thousands neither would.
Now, if I hadn't lost all my firearms in that boating accident I would have something in my safe still.

This looks like a nice product but I don;t understand how it allows more rifles in the rifle portion of the safe? Can you put them closer together? Mine seem about as close as possible with the preformed support indentions. I also use the gun socks and find they help keeping dings at a minimum. 0 -
Maalox, what it does is eliminates the notches in the safe surrounds. In essence, you could have the entire safe with any layout you desired as long as there was the area above the guns to attach the Velcro too. You no longer need the gun notches, or any "scallops" along the outside. There is velcro on the area immediately above the guns (top of the safe if it is short, or shelves). These rods drop into the barrel. They have a small bit of the opposite portion of the velcro material. This allows you to position the guns in any direction. You'll probably notice on the normal gun cutouts that one gun, like a thin lever action has plenty of room around it, where a bolt action will be tight with a 50mm objective on the scope plus the bolt sticking out. These allow you to space them exactly as needed and also allows you to place the guns in one orientation rather than the stocks being placed in a U shaped pattern which minimizes floor space.
The picture at the top of this page might help visualize it. The orange things you see are the Rifle Rods that go down into the guns barrel, then they stick via velcro to the shelf above.

I just switched to using these rods a couple of months ago. I have a double wide safe, but it was starting to puke rifles out, and I have nowhere near the advertised number of rifles for the safe. The main problem are scoped guns. The notched setup is great for non-scoped rifles, but really bad with scoped ones. Also, the rifles take more room because you have to lean them against the notches, so each rifle takes the space of about 1.5-2 rifles if they were standing directly up. With the rods you can set them straight up, freeing up a lot of space. Where my safe was overfilled before, now I actually have room for at least another 5-6 scoped rifles. 0 -
