days like this i miss a woodstove
high 50s with intermitent drizzle, low hanging overcast, the dampness chills the old muscles, aggravates the arthritus. a small wood fire sure seems like it is needed. its hell do get old. ever since i got my pacemaker in 2016 my tolerance of cold is not near what it used to be.

All you need are pain meds. They make my comfort level swing by 6+ degrees easily from when I am on them to the very, very rare occasion I have been off them.
Then again, if your old joints are aching, humping wood into, and ash out of the house constantly gets old too. We have an insert and we live on 10 heavily wooded acres. We've been here for ~8 years and have yet to even come close to running out of firewood from dying trees. If/when we no longer have free firewood (for only my labor and some chainsaw fluids) then I'll only use it in case of emergency power outage. We had to rely on our insert for nearly a week a few years back due to ice taking a lot of power lines down. Day 2, I had some ice fall off one of the logs which hit the glass window and shattered it. The rest of that event, I couldn't control the burn rate hardly at all. House was either 80, or 60.

Im close to the Canadian border and heat my home with wood. Im ahead for four or five years with fuel, and will feed the fire as long as Im able. 0 -

We have an old pot bellied wood burner. My father brought over sometime ago a rather large piece of coal, maybe weighed 15-20 pounds! At any rate I put this in the burner and after awhile the "belly" started to glow red hot! Took it out and thru it outside (probably 15 degrees at the time) and it stayed burning for 5 days 0 -
Yep, cold and damp here. 63? in the house yesterday morning, so I built a fire. 65? in the house this morning, so I built another fire. 0 -

the hamilton/missoula part is where i am, 9 miles from hamilton. snow showed about 6000 feet today. will drop more by saturday. i live about 3400 feet elevation

It's was 100 degrees here near Hampton, GA yesterday at 4:53 PM according to the National Weather Service. My thermometer said 105. It was a little better today only got up to 93. 0 -
You?re right. Nothing beats sitting by a wood stove smelling the burning wood. The feel of the heat radiating and warming the side facing the stove. There?s nothing like it... 0 -
Woodstove technology has come a long way. My son put me in a new woodstove last year. It keeps a relatively constant heat and the wood lasts twice as long, those too hot too cold cycles are gone. It will also burn a single piece of wood and keep it going, in my old oven you needed two pieces of wood for it to burn well. I'm not entirely sure how it works, but the gist of it seems to be controlling the fresh air inflow and outflow heat, some kind of mechanical thermostat. All I have to say is it sure beats my old oven hands down. I was skeptical when he first put it in, I'm sold now. My days of cutting my own firewood are over (I'm half past too old), I buy it now. My wood lasts twice as long now, this oven will eventually pay for itself. 0 -
I never have understood why, but here in Oklahoma, buying wood has always been quite expensive. I came from the S.W. MO /S.E. KS area and a rick was always ~30% cheaper. I mean Oklahoma isn't covered in forest, but neither was that area in the other two states. I don't think it would ever be profitable for me to buy wood to try to save money.
Funny you should mention Hamilton. I go to a fast food drive through every work morning on the way to work. The girl that usually works it mentioned she just got back from visiting family up there. I never knew, but her and her husband are from Hamilton and Missoula respectively.0
