    I had a great uncle who grew up on a farm in the great depression.

    He was one of 9 siblings - 3 of which died before the age of 10 - and one who had polio.

    He did a term of enlistment in the army rather than face prison time for "youthful indiscretions".

    He had to hunt to feed the extended multi generational family and some crippled / ill neighbors that belonged to the same church.

    He had acquired a Ward Burton rifle in .50 US rimfire - an 8 bore punt gun and a selection of snares and traps...

    I gather that much of what was hunted and harvested to keep folk fed was not always in season and not always taken with permission of the steward of the land - and that some of the hunting techniques and implements were not strictly legal.

    And then there was the applejack - my understanding was that much business was handled under the auspices of the church or behind it's curtain.

    This topic comes up here every once in awhile. Many people posting opinions, and they are opinions, do not have a clue. If you have bad shot placement it doesn't matter what you are using you have a wounded running critter. If you have good shot placement, which includes particular placement for the round you are using, again, it doesn't matter, you have a dead critter.

    We are not talking elephants, hippos, or cape buffalo, we are talking about deer. Quit frankly, deer are not that hard to kill. Sure they can run quite a way with a destroyed heart, but they' die. One with a bullet to the brain doesn't run, and they die.

    People in America frequently claim "there have been more deer killed with the 30-30 than any other cartridge" , quite frankly I'm skeptical of that. It may be, and if you count legal deer it is more likely to be true. But it may well be more deer have been killed with a .22 rimfire than anything else.

    A .22 and a light have kept many families feed.

    You mean TODAY???

    No- but that was the preferred weapon for jack lighters. Drive at night, find a deer, spotlight it, deer freezes, headshot with a .22. If not DRT, stunned and a cut throat in 30 seconds.

    Make it a cheap .22 bolt action, stock held together with friction tape- and if you see somebody coming, rifle goes out the window. Which is why Virginia has a law about shining lights on land you don't own. https://law.justia.com/codes/virginia/2006/toc2901000/29.1-525.html

    One, many years ago. I shot a button buck while squirrel hunting. Right through the left eye at 20 yards, dropped like a rock. My FIL, God rest his soul, only killed one LEGAL deer in his life, the antlers of which I have hanging on my wall. For all the others he used a Marlin Mod. 60 and a 3/4" 4X Weaver scope, and probably killed 15-20 deer with it. He grew up dirt poor, and to him, meat was meat. He almost always gave the meat to a couple of families he knew needed it.
    I have his Marlin in my safe, as well as the Savage M. 170 he used to take the legal 8 pointer.

    Mike, earlier you mentioned .22 Extra Long. At the current asking price, if you can find some, it would be cheaper to just shoot a 30-06. I have been looking for some for several years to display with some of my Extra Long chambered boy's rifles. I found a box of 50 last year at the Tulsa show for only $400.00. :shock: I bough a partial box with 18 in it, but I probably won't shoot it. That's all I've ever seen.

    I finished deer season real early one year. I got one opening morning, then that evening I ended up getting a 2 in one shot with a .44 mag carbine. So, I had 3 more days off, 200 miles from home, so morning of day 2 I take my 10/22. At the time I had about 3k acres of non-contiguous acres to hunt. Anyway, on the other side of the half-mile line, I hear 5 shots, pause, 4 more, pause, then at least 1 more reports from a high power rifle. I continue on my search for wabbits then I hear a tha-thump, tha-thump and I look up and this quite nice 8 point buck had just jumped a small ditch. I pulled up my rifle and through the fixed 4x scope, I could see he had been gut shot, at least once and it looked like probably twice. I didn't have much time as he was moving on to decide whether to finish him off or let nature do what it will do. He looked like he likely wouldn't make it and instead suffer a long time before succumbing. So, I shot it pretty much right between the eyes with my .22lr and it dropped. Within about a half-hour, a guy comes walking through. He asks me if I had seen any deer. I said yeah, I already shot all I could shoot and asked him why he was on private property (the owner is very protective of it). He then asked if I had seen a wounded deer. I asked if he had stopped to talk to her yet and he hadn't. I told him I had finished one off that he could get but he had to go back to his property, drive around and tell her what happened, and ask if he could drive back there. So, he did and he comes driving up with a couple of friends in the truck. As they were loading it up the guy said, man, you ruined the mount. I said I'm not sure I'd want to mount the failure anyway. He said how so, it's a nice size buck. I said you shot at least 8 rounds, and I think it was 9 or 10 and all you managed was to gut shot it. I shoot it one time with my .22lr carbine and drop it in its track. Turns out he had a Browning BAR. He had shot 2 full mags of 4 each, plus he started with one in the chamber, and had loaded his 3rd mag. His excuse was "it wouldn't quit running". After berating him a little more in front of his friends to shoot quality shots, not quantity, he then left. I sometimes wonder if there is a nice 8 point mounted on the wall somewhere with a little 1/4" circle nearly in the middle between his eyes. :evil:

    Certainly not ideal for the best, clean kill. But, it will certainly do the job if the person on the trigger does theirs.

    First off it is illegal here. Second, I have shot many deer and even with the perfect shot they still can go and some do go a long way from the hit.

    A Nissan Versa kills them DRT.

    I've hit two. (I call it the "Deer Slayer.")

    It was rather expensive though. Around $6500, first time. Over $5K second time.

    A Nissan Versa is the automotive equivalent to a .22lr.

    It gets the job done.

    Of course, 55 mph does not hurt either. (Both in the dark, [4:30'ish am] in the fog, on the highway.) Thought I was going to be tasting Deer meat through the windshield, each time. :o :shock:
