Another 6.5x55 Swedish question

How do you think the 6.5X55 Swedish round would do on hogs at around 100-200 yards?

    I use a 6.5 Grendel effectively for hogs at those ranges and the Swiss has more oomph

    6.5x55, one of my favorite cartridges. Capable of accuracy equal to 6.5 CM and 6.5x47 Lapua, with more velocity.

    IIRC, 6.5x55 has taken more mouse than any other caliber. I'm a huge fan of the 140 gr Berger VLD Hunt in 6.5, but might choose the long 160gr pills for hogs.

    probably so, but at those ranges you're going to need a reeeeally high powered scope.

    For a long time locating Norma oryx factory loads was rather difficult - in the gunshop days we always had a supply on the wood grain look 20 round boxes - and usually some lapua or fiocchi...

    Your local gunshop or indoor range or big box sport store might not stock it - but chances are pretty good of finding some on the GB auction side - or failing that the usual online supply sources...

    And of course if you handled / reload the options and outlets are endless.

    And personally I think the virgin or once fired Norma brass is superior in quality to other offerings - tighter tolerances and better materials and longer brass lifespan.

    I found a bunch almost instantly via the usual avenues.

    YMMV I suppose.

    In a pinch Winchester must offer a soft point or HPBT and Remington a core lokt variant - pink tipped hornady fusion???

    Most of the entry level or cheap offerings like wolf or privi may only offer FMJ BALL offerings along the military standard materials / profile / and architecture.

    For your postulated parameters I am uncertain it makes much of a noticeable difference on the terminal performance end of things.

    I would stay away from wooden bullets used to launch rifle grenades or for practice purposes - or other odd non standard colored tip mil surplus fodder.

    It's a Swedish Mauser, different country altogether... ;)
    IIRC, 6.5x55 has taken more mouse than any other caliber.

    Definitely need a much higher power scope for mice at 200 yards! ;):D

    Easy peasy.

    There are no drawbacks to using the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser for hunting hogs.

    Virtually any hunting style bullet in the range from 120 grains to 160 grains will work for hogs. Ive used the Barnes TTSX solid with the plastic tip for excellent results but inexpensive Speer SP will do. I'm sure that FMJ will be sufficient but the probability of just penciling through from a shot with lesser precision is possible. Avoid the gristle plate in the front and if close enough or you have the ability, go for the ear or eye, saves meat in case you want to butcher one and have some good pork.

    The Swedish Mauser would knock 'em dead! I have killed hogs with a 30-06, and with a .50 round ball TC Hawken, and a .58 minie ball Civil War Zouave, and with a 1911 Colt .45 [legal in Georgia.]

    Hogs are not hard to kill just shoot 'em behind the front leg like you would a deer. I am certain that the Swede would be great.

    Hell, I did put mouse in there huh. ..

    Oh well, yes, they'll kill mouse, moose, and hogs. I've killed more wild hogs with a 243 than anything else. Contrary to popular belief, they are not too hard to kill.

    But would it maintain its retroactive paratime effectiveness against confederate zouave troops over say mini balls or lead shed from an iron frame Henry loaded on Sunday and shooting all week...

    W.D.M. Bell used a 6.5x54, very similar to a 6.5x55, for elephant culling. he had limited success because the solid bullets of the day weren't very good. im sure it will work quite well for hogs.
