That "I lost my guns in a boating accident" won't do you any good in California. If you lose a gun and don't report it with in 30 days you better not be caught with it at a later date. In other words you can't say it was lost at the time they are looking for it. 0 -

I can still hear the plaintive strains of nearer my god to thee as Mauser's and mosins and mannlichers slipped below the surface - lost in the laurental abyss or marianas trench - or perhaps consumed by volcanic eruption and pyroplastic flows and magma tubes...

It's oddly coincidental how many guns of this type were inherited from dead relatives or neighbors and never underwent any kind of registration or formal transfer of ownership - or happened to be firearms with no serial numbers...
Not only hard to prove you never lost them but hard to prove you ever had them to begin with...

As memory serves me, the first time I ever saw this phrase was when CGR made a post about it right here on GB many moons ago. So, in my mind, the 'boating accident' genre is wholly a GB thing. However, now I see this phrase all over the interwebz, and in some of the most unlikely places too. Were we so cutting edge and influential here on GB that we influenced the whole web??? Or, was this saying around elsewhere before CGR mentioned it?
Serious question I've been meaning to ask.
All I know, FCD, is that I had heard the expression long before I ever joined up with GB.0 -

Probably ~25 years ago my brother in law and I were fishing in my small aluminum fishing boat. One could stand briefly to move around, it wasn't like a canoe, but it was too tippy to fish standing. But, I was in the back running the hand controlled trolling motor and saw a real nice bass under a tree we just passed. So, I stood up, turned around, and threw my topwater just beyond where it was at. It shot after my bait and like a rookie, I did the hookset on sight instead of feel. I missed and rocked the boat making me lose my balance. Now, normally, I could have just stepped slightly, lowered my center of gravity, grabbed the gunnels and I'd been fine. I had done that before. But, this time I was too far back and my feet were under the aluminum bench (with the flotation foam in it) and when I stepped, they didn't immediately come out.
Now, my S&W 2206 and my brother in law's S&W 686+ were sitting on top of our respective tackle boxes. Dollar signs were all I saw if I tipped the whole boat over. So, I lunged backwards and to the side with all my might and did a very clumsy back splash into the water. The boat spun in a circle and my brother in law thought we just found the Loch Ness Monster. I still had my fishing pole in my hand. I swam to shore and he paddled the boat over there to pick me up. Some water got into the boat, maybe 3" across the entire bottom but nothing was lost fortunately. I really do think that if I had been stuck like I was and falling backwards/over like that, if I hadn't done what I did then we would have capsized.
But, back to the question at hand. Since then I always have carried every gun I have at any given time with me in my boats, no matter the size. The canoe barely was above water when it capsized.0 -

I lost my thundercats glock when my rainbow unicorn pool floatie sprang a leak...
It's was no orchestra playing nearer my god to thee but the sanyo cassette player was still playing white snake as it sank into to deepend...
And CVS called her unsinkable (the pool floatie not the Titanic or one of bed sister ships)
How many Canadians lost there lakefields and SMLE's on the Edmund Fitzgerald...
And are you telling me there were no Luger's and Mauser's and Walther's on the Bismarck???

Salt water oxidation is a nasty element to lost guns...
It is futile to retrieve your lost guns as I have discovered.😊
The oceans and bays are unforgiving to accidental deposits.0
