    No doubt those kids lived a rough life. Even the ones that did get adopted there was a good chance they would be abused and worked like mining mules on farms.

    In that top photo if you count there's 11 little girls and only 5 boys. The boys were being adopted and put to work.

    I would have said Angelic. Sister Annunciata wore a black and white habit and according to the Catholic kids made them tremble.

    All eight years of my grade school life were taught by nuns. Pillars of Black Death is an apt description. They ruled - with rulers. The kind with the brass insert on one edge, and that's the edge they hit you with. Often. And hard. They dictated every aspect of your existence. There was even one and only one way to neatly fold a handkerchief over your fingers to blow your nose.

    Their habits trailed right to the ground so they did not walk, they appeared to glide or float from point to point. No part of them showed except their hands and the very front of their faces. I think the image of Dr Who's Daleks was modeled after nuns. Except that Daleks were less dangerous.

    Still have the scars on my knuckles from the Penguins of Pain. Whoever wrote that scene in the Blues Brothers had to have been sitting near me. Wham...chit!...Wham...dammit!....Wham...before I could remember to say "Lord have mercy!"
    Sister Mary Ellen was 6'3" and 200lbs, and had a right arm that any pro baseball pitcher would have envied. That combined with the eyes in the back of her head that could see through the habit, assured a direct hit between the eyes with a chalkboard eraser every time. That was to stun and blind you with chalk dust so you couldn't run, as she came at you with the 3ft long rubber tipped pointer for a real azz beating.
    I know where Satan gets his recruits for the torture in hell.

    I would have to guess they weren't serving coffee to children; maybe it was soup.
