Anyone intimately familiar with Stonington Isl.?
Down East on the Coast of Maine.
I have been there many times, camping and Sea Kayaking. (By myself, and with my Son.) Now 28 and living in Denver.
I keep watching Building off the Grid, and Maine Cabin Masters episodes.
I have located 2 acres with 650' of Coastal waterfront. ($110,000) I have kayaked right past it inumerable times, thinking how nice it would be to own property there. (Doubt they would turn down $105,000.)
The domicile I have planned would not take much. (Apprx. 800-1000sq. ft.)My current property in NE TN. is bought and payed for. ($130,000) about 7 years ago.
I retire in two years.

Yes.
Coastal winters on Maine, are much, much less harsh, than those of the Extreme NE TN/W. NC region.
We are not talking about way upstate inland Maine. Been there also, winter mountaineering/ backcountry trips. (Mt. Katahdin.)

Currently watching a rebuild of a camp on Frenchmans Bay. (Boothbay Harbor, etc.) Been there as many times as Stonington Island. (One was a stop, on the way to the other.)
Exquisite seafood. Miss it so.

Been to Main half a dozen times. Ugly rocky beaches. Cheap lobster. Long ass state. Signs are in metric so all the Canucks can read em. Damn sure wouldn?t want to live there. If I couldn?t be here in the south east by the ocean I would head back out west or maybe northern Georgia above Gweenett county. 0 -

You are aware that there are no tacos in Maine right?? And if they did have them it would be at some quaint little roadside stand all painted in pastel colors with signs hawking seaweed tacos or rubarb and almond butter tacos or some other politically correct mess. In contrast tacos are free in tee o wanna. Good chicken tacos made from the losers from the cock fights. There is great kayaking on the rio grande and you can make a few dollars giving folks rides across to the U S. I think you would be much happier there. 0 -
Maine is the only state I have not visited, but you will not see me paddling past your house, either....

Lets talk about...Panama.
Moderate weather year round. Cheap ocean-front property. Tax breaks for retirees.

Believe it or not, there are some things I enjoy eating more than Taco's. Fresh Seafood, would be one of them.
Thanks for the videos Mike. I have done inumerable day trips, kayaking around there. I have also done a 14 day Sea Kayaking trip in the Deer Island region. I was the Navigator. I am entimately familiar with that area, and those Islands.
I will peruse the video's and enjoy them immensely. Thank You.

Wesleyan university - we lived in the dorms on campus during the summer while shooting at blue trail and attending the training camp (a qualifying event for the national championships at camp Perry or the Olympic training ground invited at Colorado Springs)
Martha's vineyard rod and gun club - and the greater vineyard itself as an island vacation spot - and while in college as an auxiliary Leo shrubbery the tourist season
Nantucket island had a nice indoor range and a small independent gunshop with apartments above for seasonal employees - some of the folk from this old house had business offices close by and the new Yankee workshop was 3 streets over - seeing norm was the norm...

Stephen kings estate in Bangor with the creepy nightmare inspiring wrought iron work - he was hyper local and the towns and townies protected him from blow ins with poor intent and bad manors...

I am familiar with the area just in different ways and paths and places than you.

Wish I could post a photo montage of my 14 day trip here. One of my best Outdoor Adventures EVER.
Ate really well that trip. Paddled up to Lobster boats and bought dinner, repeatedly. Went claming and extricating Mussels (as per the video,) at low tide. We packed Butter, Garlic, salt/pepper, Pita bread, Crown Royal etc.
Drag lined a small Ice fishing rig, for Saltwater fish, while underway.
Thermarest pad, bag, and a small fire right above high tide line, night after night, after night. Stars were incredible. So totally relaxing it is hard/difficult to relay. Incredible trip.
Told my buds, White Sharks were prevalent here. They all scoffed. (Until) One Island we were camping on, (we would always walk the circumference of the Island, in the evening." We spotted a large Seal, cut in half, on the beach. I commented, "what do you think did that, a ships propeller?" New found respect. :shock:
Found a large wide spread 8 point rack/skull/skeleton while traversing an (obviously) seldom used trail circuiting Moose Island. (Brought it home. Looking at it now.) Had an up close and personal (I was asleep) encounter with a Moose that smelled my head, (I am told.) Overlooking the cliff, away from my compadres.
They observed it, I was oblivious, and asleep. :?

The girls follow the instagram account of a giant female great white shark - a matriarchal megladon - that was tagged with some tracking devices...
She is easily 21 - 23 foot in length and has migrated and hunted up and down the coast but always comes back to the new England island resort area - the little local school kids study her and follow her - thinks it's made the national nightly news a few times - she is a ginormous great white...
This is were they filmed jaws - were the move was supposed to take place - she may be bigger than Bruce and does eat seals.
Woods hole is another favorite locale of mine - one of the last stops between the mass pike and the vineyard ferry...

Not too familiar with Stonington Island. When we lived in Maine we used to go to Mt Desert Island and Bar Harbor all the time. Especially to see first sunrise in US on Cadillac Mt.
Used to scuba dive quite a bit around Bar Harbor. Water was always cold had to wear my dry suit even in the summer.
Climbed Mt Katahdin many times to walk on the knife edge. Used to take what they called the golden road from Greenville.
Stop at Chimney pond at Baxter state park can almost always guarantee to see a moose or more.
