i agree it is probably a good idea but it will only happen when it makes as much or more money than oil pumped from the ground.

Good news for WV. Wife is from the Beckley area and this is good for the state. Coal gasification has been around for a long time but anti coal regulations have stopped development in this area. I worked on one of these projects back in the 90s but it was shelved due to varying factors.

Son worked on gasification of coal and hybrid cars at WVU. He graduated as a ME and moved on to banking industry after designing and building burners for steel mills. We have enough coal in this country to last at least 300 years. Think of all the jobs etc that would be created if our scientist/engineers and government would put their heads together. Got to be a way to make that coal burn clean.

There is potential for the future.

Currently, the cost of producing liquid fuel from coal ranges from $ 55.00 to $ 70.00 per barrel, depending upon the technology used and who is doing the reporting.

A major investment in coal to liquid fuel production would require a projected stable market price of liquid fuel of $ 100.00 per barrel or more. This is a difficult price level to maintain in the near term, as this projected stable price would bring a lot of idled higher cost production on line world wide.

Long term? I believe it will happen. There will be many of us who will not live to see it, however.
