Side Bars
So I was trying to watch "Salem's Lot" on blu ray where the usual black bars (letter box) on top and bottom were on the sides. I tried to adjust the image to fill the screen but it wasn't right. So what gives? Also the disc seemed to be jacked up since it locks up and skips but I think this is two different issues.

I think (not an expert) that it has to do with the fact that the show was formatted for the original TV screen height/width ratio, and today's sets are wider. If you stretch it to fit your screen, everything looks fat. 0 -
Yep - when you adjusted the ratio to full your screen, you distorted it. Go back and endure the black areas or keep it and endure the distortion... 0 -
Here is part of an Amazon review of the Blu-ray version. Looks like even the Blu-ray will have the side bars on a widescreen TV. So, let's talk about the Blu Ray quality. It is outstanding. This does not appear to be the same transfer as the DVD. It's pretty clean. There is some film grain that I didn't notice on the DVD, but that's because it's a great transfer. The grain is slight, so it's not really an issue, just a natural part of film. The colors are vivid, the audio sounds great, and the clarity is outstanding for a 1979 production. I saw details, I was never able to see in the DVD. It is in full screen 1:37, so you will have the black bars on the sides, just as the regular DVD did.0 -
Formatted for either "full screen" or "wide screen" if you have a wide screen and run "full screen" there will be black on the sides. If you have a full screen and run "wide screen" things will be compressed side to side and distorted. 0 -
Yeah I spent a while "adjusting". Putting it on "Normal" the image got even smaller and the side bars got even wider. Then there was one adjustment combo I did the image was centered and was framed in all four sides 
. "Zoom" made the image fill the screen and made David Soul wide like me .
Also the film is 3 hours long. So I'll have to prepare to view.

What is so annoying is that there used to be 4:3 TV's and then came 16:9 TV's to match movies. So, then a new format comes out? I don't keep real current as far as TV's and such, but my PC's and gaming rigs stay very high end. I have a 4k monitor, but only 1080p TV. I saw recently Samsung had an 98" 8k resolution TV. For the small sum of ~$70k.
