welding question
Ok to start with I share a lot of similar trates as a lot of you , as far as repairing , building . and general over all abilities in about every aspect of home and auto , the classic jack of all trades master of none :oops:
any way I have a finish mower 3 point style pull behind mower . one of the spindle mounts has over time cracked around and ripped out the bolt mounting holes for one of the spindles over time and cracks traveling from the holes out into the deck
my plan I am just going to cut the section out with all the damage and weld in a new panel with a new mounting area for the spindle ( and it will be measured put back to the same location
so no blades hitting or gaps in the mowing process ( I know some one would ask )
my question ?
the way I see it , to make a oval patch to prevent any sharp corners welded into the deck that could allow a stress crack to form later on or go with just a square corner plate, maybe be just as well ? to me it would seem to be a start point for any cracks to have a starting point
the deck has few more cracks in a differet area I will drill a hole at both ends of each crack of them and weld back I have always done so many years ago I was told it would prevent th ecracks from traveling

any welding on truck frames is always oval repair.
that is what I would use0 -
Take your time and "stitch weld" the repair in place. Then, if you feel the need, you can go back and complete the bead allowing plenty of time for the metal to cool between welds.
My blind Son does mower rebuilding in his spare time so I end up doing the deck welding/repair. It's unlikely you can match the type/gauge of deck metal with your patch so don't induce a bunch of stress by getting the dissimilar metals overheated during welding.0 -
I wouldn't cut out the old metal, weld cracks up best you can and then weld a patch on the bottom/inside of the deck, so the spindle is the same height as the others and then turn the spindle to fresh metal 1/3-1/4 turn and drill new mounting holes through the old deck and new patch, should last you another 10 years or so...... 0 -
Yes, a round or oval, or a square patch with large radius corners will be best. 0 -

I have an Ariens 25 hp 54" mower. We have ten rough, bumpy acres that I mow with it. The deck has cracked in 2 places and one place just wore though thanks to sandy soil effectively sandblasting it. The ears that the rear differential mounts to also cracked and started to split as well. This is all over the course of 9 years... Anyway, just re-welding all the cracks on the deck, adding similar metal to the area that was simply eaten through were all it took for those repairs. The frame however, when it cracked, the rear end twisted the metal mounts and the belt came off, that is how I found it since it was hidden behind the wheel. Because it was not only cracked, but twisted and torn, I hammered it flat, then welded some slightly heavier angle steel to it. Not one of the repairs have had to be done again.
Another option for the mounting holes might be to weld washers in place over the original location after welding up the seams.0 -
