Old and being useless
Watched The Horse Whisperer the other night and, during the movie, Robert Redford was asked "if there was anything he was afraid of". He answered "getting old and useless".
I can relate to that. I'm 76yo with deteriorating health and can barely take care of my needs much less anything around the house. Gotta start having someone clean the house and make repairs, if necessary. Unable to help the wife cook. She still works and I can't expect her to do anything around the house.
Being useless is a miserable feeling.

I really can't keep up anymore. I do what I can, contribute what I can. I take a lot of breaks and try to use my mind more than my back to make what I do more efficient.
My Sacroiliac joint and my lower back starts acting up after a half an hour of activity and gets progressively worse until it is debilitating (groaning and screaming). Two choices, use pain killers and ignore it, then likely do more damage in the long term or pace myself, a marathon and not a sprint-0 -

Having someone come in and help is something you should look forward to because you deserve it. Plus, you get to share a bit of your wisdom with another person while they get a paycheck......sounds like they are pretty lucky too. Don't feel bad....you've done more than your share. 0 -
When someone apologizes for making me wait, for some reason, I say, "Not a problem, I'm old and retired and just waiting to die."
They usually move things right along after that.
But you are correct, my fingers don't work, the GQB's* won't give me pain pills, I can't sleep, can't work and can't do most of the things I always lived to do.
So I've decided to be the cranky old man that takes sound shots at everything I can't smack with my cane. Hahahahahaha
I'm the only surviving member of The Crippled Old Codgers Hunting Club. That means I'm the president of the club. It also means I'm the guy that gets to unclog the toilet. Haha Most of my friends are 4-legged. Hahahaha

Positive the government pays you SOMETHING like, SSI, Pension, etc. or private industry, then you pay bills & wife.

I'm old and for over a half century I've worked and taken care of other people in my family so I figure if I need help it it's their time to get off of their asses and take care of me and if they don't they need not go to the will reading after I'm gone. 0 -
Who ever coined the phrase.....These are the golden years.....should be....drawn and quartered,.....shot.....hanged.....tared and feathered.....well, you get the idea.....
It ain't so bad forgetting to zip up after going.

I am closing fast on that part of life .
before my dad passed away he would have me help him ( i always did ) but he would assist , toward the end he would ask me to do a favor ,them apologize for troubling me and not being able to do it any more , he was like me always proud to be independent and not ask for help , I told him more than once all the time you helped me when I was young and what he taught me so much it was my honor to help him now , I knew he could work on his cars or house like he did when young. cancer beat him in the end RIP Dad
I find myself now asking my sons to stop by If I have a lot of heavy lifting or jobs that I could do by myself not long ago , I need a extra set of hands or a younger back to help and I feel like my dad, most likely did hate to have them take away time from there daily routine just to help the old fellow

I had hip surgery 7/16 and have been basically "useless" since. The rest of my family got a wake up call about how much work I was really doing around here.
I don't know if or how well the fix is going to work so this semi-useless condition may continue for quite some time but someone's going to have to make up the difference soon.

It's called the "Golden Years" because it takes all the gold you have accumulated to stay above ground.0
