what insect is this

what is it ?
I found many in a dead maple tree I was splitting. the first I found had 2 tails about 4-6". when I went to pick it up the one tail fell off

  Ichneumonid wasp is correct. the long trailing tube is the ovipositor. Female inserts it into plant tissue, including wood, to lay eggs. Larvae feed on other insects infesting the plant, or they feed on plant tissue.
