buying a new PU truck and need advice.
My 1996 Ford PU has been very reliable for me, but earlier this year it had some problems with ignition wiring. I think when the wiring starts to go bad on a vehicle you cant depend on it any longer. It also needs paint and interior work. Ive been looking for a used pickup to replace it but Im not having much luck. Im looking on Craiglist. Im typing in 2010 to 2019 Ford or Toyota 1/2 ton, extra or crew cab, 4x4, V-8, tow package, mileage up to 100,000. prices to 25,000. In a city of 3 million people Im getting to look at maybe 8 to 10 possible choices. All are sold by dealers and some have salvage titles. Im not ready to buy yet just testing the waters. (Ill be selling some safe queens on the auction side for my down payment) I have'nt purchased a car since 1997 and thing seem to have changed. I need some ideas as to a better way to buy a used truck.

I've had Nissan full size pick ups, for the last 13 years. First one had 129,000+ on the clock. But than I had, a mano a mano, with a elk. (Miserable vermin, where I live. Don't even want to think, about all the folks that get seriously hurt and killed by them every year). Freekin insurance company, refused to fix it. So I had to get another one.
The Nisan pick ups, are real hard to come buy. Stricky a sellers market. Best deal I could swing. Was a new old stock one, that the dealer had on his lot, for over a year. Go with a used Nisan, if you can even find a descent one.0 -
Those I know with a toyota tundra say they are gas hogs...and the fords aren't any better.
Maybe look at a Dodge Ram 4x4 .. 1/2 to w/hemi is a great truck and decent mileage.
You money, your choice.

I bought my F250 on CL. Found a dealer advertising. Had to look a long time to find one that met my needs and price range but when I did I jumped on it. Only negative is its a regular cab. Had to settle but for what I paid it was worth it. 0 -
I like the Nissan Frontier. This is a 2010, King Cab with 4WD. I bought it a year ago, 40K miles always garaged for $16K. I ought to be arrested for theft I got such a good deal. Of all places I got it from a web site named carguru.
I have been driving Nissans since 1988 they are great trucks. Just as good as Toyota and a little cheaper. I am 6-3 and they are plenty roomy.0 -

If you don't like being broke dead on the side of the road and having expensive repair bills before the vehicle is paid for, I recommend Toyota.

I do smell a little sake when I crank it up I think the engine is made by Japs.
Also, you know all these vehicles are run by computers, and every year, on December 7 at 8am, all kinds of bells and whistles go off, on the dashboard for sixty seconds, in memory of that great day in Jap history. It is not too distracting doesn't bother me a bit.0 -
Before this truck I had a 1969 F-250 and 1984 Bronco, great vehicles (for me). But in the last decade Ford has put out some very poor quality diesel engines and is having longevity problems with their Ecoboost engines. If I can get a gas Ford V-8 I will.Aztngundoc22 wrote:OK :

If you have ready cash, and I mean ready right now. You can find good buys through the list. 4x4 f150 with less than 100,000 miles in the 8-12K range. But they sell right now and will be older models in the 2002-2005 range that have been garage kept and drove little. I have found them but haven't had the cash in my pocket at the time and they are sold before I can secure them.
You know what you want, do the research on prices and just look for one that is reasonably priced, as in not over priced. The list, autotrader, local sites, etc. Pickups are expensive right now as so many people thinks it's just cool to drive one. Drives the price up for us that actually need one, but that's how markets work. If pickups fall out of vogue look at all the bargains that will be there for us.
Lot's of advice on brands here. Myself, I've had good luck with all American brands through the years. Some year models are better than others and I've been lucky not to get one from a really bad production. But with the bail outs and sell outs of 2008 I took GM and Dodge off of my list and that leaves me with Ford if I want to buy one from an American company. My current pickup is a 2000 f150 4x4 with the 5.4L V8 and it has almost 300K on it and I need to replace it. Of the current V8 4x4 1/2 ton gas trucks I would look at Fords and if I was going to go foreign a Nissan.0 -

I went with a Ford f150 crew cab 2 years ago, although I bought a lease trade- in vehicle. 24000 mile I got almost a full warrenty, 4 oil changes-tire rotation-wash job, etc.
Really think I'll do the same thing again. So far have had extremely good luck.

The latest edition of consumer repots has the Tundra as the best used pickup truck. I had a 2006 extended cab 4X2 I put 165,000 miles on and only did typical maintenance along with a battery and tires. I have a 2015 crewmax 4X4 now, only 38,000 miles but have done nothing except oil and filter changes and tire rotations. 0 -

I have been wondering what it takes to kill a Nissan. We may never know.
Bought my first one, Frontier with King Cab, new in 1988. Put 194K miles on it, girlfriend drove it one day, totalled it.
Bought another new Frontier in 1996, put 238,000 miles on it, it rusted all out up here in the salt and snow of NC mountains.
Sold it to a guy at the tire store for 400 bucks, what it was worth at the crusher. This clever hill billy removed the bed, welded a new frame onto it, repaired the bed. I ran in to him last month the truck has 344K miles, still runs like a top.
They Won't Die.
Next one, bought used but in great shape, a 1998 4WD Frontier w/King Cab, put 100K miles on it, driving down I 85 one night, drunk female drag racing on the interstate hit me, totalled the truck, should have killed me but didn't.
Bought another used 4WD Frontier, drove it 6 years, it rusted out, sold it to a guy and he is still driving it.
Now I have this red 2010 beauty. So, the Nissan will rust out, but other than that I don't know what it takes to make a Nissan die.
ps My girlfriend has never driven one of my trucks since she totalled that first one.0 -
I drive second hand Chevies. Generally speaking, they're the cheapest to repair and insure. In addition, Chevy often gets better mileage than other "full size" pickups.
I seriously doubt I'll EVER buy another new vehicle unless I win the lottery and since I don't buy lottery tickets that increases the odds.
A relative was looking at buying a new Dodge diesel last month and it's somewhat of a buyer's market but then I asked if he'd checked on what it would cost to insure such a vehicle. THAT stopped him in his tracks.
From what I've heard, there's a glut of 2019 Chevy 1/2 ton crew cabs sitting on dealer's lots and prices may be attractive if that's in your plans.0 -

25K will buy a nice truck. Your search needs to include the whole USA. I completed the same thing you are trying 10 months ago. Was looking for a 3/4 ton 4x4 truck with low mileage for about half of what one cost new. I looked for a couple of months till I located the one I purchased. Since it was still under warranty, I sent a deposit to the dealer, ordered plane tickets and picked it up two weeks later. 4 yr old Ford SuperDuty F250 4x4 Supercab long bed with 21k miles. Since long bed trucks are far and few between I jumped on the deal since it was well below wholesale price. Funny thing it was on a Toyoto lot. It made the toyotos look small. Traded in because of an estate. Drove it home and totally satisfied especially since I got a deal. Just make sure you buy a truck large enough to do the job. 0 -
My Tundra is a 2012, and I have loved every minute of it. At 107K I will be driving it for years to come. You might also look at the Taco if you don't need full size. They stand even higher than the Tundra. 0 -

Unless I wreck it I will just keep my 17 yo 02 PS 7.3 6 speed 3.73 18-20 mpg 4x4 hand shaker. It so far has been trouble free with 34k miles on the ticker, as been average about 2k a year.
It will tow 15k easy and you will forget it is back there if you don't keep looking in the mirror.
It is in its work clothes right now and it stays in the garage 24/7/365
Had 10k plus many times on the trailer plus trailer weight and hardly notice it
Had 14 5x5 bales on a 25' trailer many times, 90hp tractor with round baler and hardly notice behind it as it has the low bulldog first gear with the 6 speed manual tranny and I can go to the low range on the 4x4 and that gives me 6 more gears for a total of 12. It will creep like a turtle in low range 1st gear.0 -

Almost impossible to find in the US outside of government fleet vehicles or commercial use applications - very popular in Canada and south America...
It's a base vehicle that is not loaded with 100 luxury power options - just what's needed to have a livable modern truck - they offered police package and military package and a construction / logging package...
Since the dealerships make a killing on the options on trucks you just don't see many of these variants...
A friend managed to get one from Canada and it's just unkillable - it never fails.
His is highway department public works yellow with a grey vinyl interior and has AC and a rear slider but only maybe a dozen options on the vehicle...
He always has people asking what kind of truck is that cause nobody ever saw one that was not a loaded crew or double cab with fancy wheels and trim package.

Coworker just bought a 2016 Ram 4x4, 4 door, black n silver with more bells and whistles than you might even want. I THINK it's the 5.9 hemi. 34k on the clock for $26k and it looks (almost) like new. Claims to get 20-21 mpg with strictly highway driving.

Bough a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder SE (no 4wd) for $2,400 drive out. That was maybe $1,000 high for 142,000 miles but it looked like someone had put a in new interior. Honestly can people get a 18 year interior (cloth) looking like new by only cleaning?
You can't believe used prices on any sales venue. Why ??? don't know but something fishy about prices, Saw $4500 for another 2002 pathfinder and it looked like the clear coat was peeling from age.

I use "cars.com" to get as wide of a search area as I'm willing to travel. It doesn't "find" all the available choices but it's a start.
When pricing my old JEEP, I used the same place to get an idea of what dealers within 200 miles are asking for similar type vehicle.0
